In an unexpected move, Capital University drops wrestling without notifying coaches and wrestlers before doing so. Find out what you can do to show your disapproval! Capital University in Columbus Ohio announced on March 16, 2001 that they are dropping the wrestling program. Capital which is an NCAA Division III school, has offered wrestling as a varsity sport since 1957. It seems that one of their reasons for dropping the team is due to the inconsistency and the lack of success of the team. Yet, the wrestling team has been the only team so far this year that sent anybody to Nationals. Capital is also just finishing up a new "Capital Center" on their campus. In the brochure to get support and funding, they mentioned wrestling. I just want to say that I am glad I did not support the University by sending any funds because I would have been one VERY upset individual if I went money and they discontinue the program before it's even finished. The drop of the program came as a shock to everybody including the coaches and wrestlers as nobody knew about it until they had a meeting last Thursday to tell them about it. One reason why they may not have told anybody may be due to the fact that they didn't want any calls and or emails...well, let's make sure they hear from EVERYBODY now!!! Although the decision seems to be final, we can still send emails and phone calls to Capital University's Athletic Director and President to show our disapproval. PLEASE be sure to email and/or call BOTH of these individuals. We want to tie up their phone lines and emails with calls supporting the sport of wrestling and disapproving their decision to drop the program. Athletic Director: Roger Welsh (614) 236-6528 (His email address doesn't work so please send it to his secretary at dfelicet@capital.edu You can also send in faxes to (614) 236-6178 Also please MAKE SURE that the Board of Trustees hears your voices as well!!! Both the Athletic Director and President can (and probably will) simply sweep all your emails and letters under the floor but we want the Board of Trustees to know that there are a lot of people opposed to the dropping of the program, AND the manner in which they did it. I have actually received email back from a member who told me he will inquire about this and bring it up the next time he is at Capital. If we can get everybody to send email and/or call, they will know how much interest there is in saving this program. Please also make sure they know that you are writing to them because they are on the Board of Trustees at Capital University and let them know what is going on! Tell them you support wrestling and Capital Wrestling. I have listed contact information on as many as I could find. If you know how to contact any of these people, please let me know. Also, please notify me if any of these are incorrect.
