This week the Brute Adidas studios of TDR will be filled with memories of the past and some hopes for the future. Our guests range in age from 28 to 99 years old. Quite the span of wrestling history. Over the years I've learned that riches in the sport of wrestling come from a variety of sources. Championships, All-American honors, recognition by your peers, induction in to our various halls and museums, and by the young people our coaches touch that propel them to even higher goals than we ever imagined. 
 
Our guests this week have one thing in common- They took the time to touch the lives and leave their mark on the souls of those they have coached. Thank you for impacting these athletes, these young people for they have evolved in to what they are due to your teaching. Wrestling teaches and inspires.

Dan Mashek- former 30-year head coach for Don Bosco HS. Dan just retired from coaching. Dan went to UNI to be a teacher, graduating in 1970. He wrestled for Chuck Patten. He considers his greatest career accomplishment: Coaching. Dan Wrestled on the same HS Team with Dan Gable at Waterloo West with Bob Siddens as coach. Dan has been married to Linda 40 years They enjoy 2 Kids- a daughter, Liz Mashek who is asst. principle at Riverwoods Elem. Son Tom Mashek is the Wrestling Coach at Muscatine and (Special Ed) teacher as well. Dan was recently inducted in the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa April 19. The Glen Brand HOF is located at the Dan Gable Wrestling Museum in Waterloo, Iowa.
 
Duane Goldman- Head Coach at Indiana University, a four-time NCAA finalist and champion at the University of Iowa in 1986 under Dan Gable. Duane's NCAA career record stands at 132-10. After winning NCAAs, Goldman went on to compete extensively on the international level as a member of the U.S. National Team. He won a gold medal at the Pan-American Championships in 1987 and was a member of the 1987 World Cup Team that took bronze in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Goldman won two Canadian Cup Championships, placed second in the Cerro Pelado Tournament, in Cuba, and medaled in various tournaments throughout Europe. Along with all these accomplishments, he earned a fifth-place finish at the renowned Tbilisi Tournament in the former Soviet Union. In addition, he served as an alternate on the U.S. Olympic team in 1988. In the same year, he spent a season with the Martiyny Club de Lutte in Martigny, Switzerland, where he both competed and coached. Duane has coached NCAA Champions Joe Dubuque and Angel Escobedo at 125 lbs 3 out of the past 4 years. Duane met his wife Patricia while at Iowa and has 3 kids. His son is a HS freshman and wrestles as well. Duane was recently inducted in the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa April 19. Steve Garland- Head Coach of the Cavaliers of Virginia. Former Cavalier All-American Steve Garland is in his second season as head wrestling coach at Virginia. A master motivator and recruiter, Garland has worked diligently to push the Cavaliers among the nation's elite. The fruits of his labors are already apparent. This season, Garland welcomes one of the most highly-anticipated first-year classes in program history. The class is a consensus Top-10 group which was ranked No. 5 nationally by W.I.N. Magazine and No. 8 by Intermat. They join an experienced core group from a young 2006-07 squad which had its own share of success with three All-ACC performers - all of whom return this year. Garland's Cavaliers recorded an 8-10 overall mark and 2-3 ACC record in his opening campaign in 2006-07. Under Garland's tutelage, junior Rocco Caponi captured the ACC title at 184 pounds, while sophomore Eric Albright was the league runner-up at 133. Both earned a berth in the NCAA Championships, where Albright won three matches. The duo also earned All-ACC honors, as did freshman Kellon Balum.
 
Chuck Patten- Former Head Coach at UNI from 1964 to 1982. Chuck graduated from UNI in 1961 and is now living on the West Coast. He obtained his Master's degree from Oregon and has been married 20 years to wife Lynn. They have 2 daughters, Jamie and Cindy. Chuck's most notable achievement as a coach is that everyone who wrestled for him got a degree. Chuck was recently inducted in the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa April 19th. The Glen Brand HOF is located at the Dan Gable Wrestling Museum in Waterloo, Iowa.

Tony Davis- Tony is the club coach at North Carolina. Prior to that, he helped NC State achieve some success and now is teaching school in which he's a found a great deal of joy. Tony won an NCAA title in 2000 at 149 pounds, becoming Northern Iowa's first Division I NCAA champion in wrestling since 1963. He also placed second at the 1999 NCAA tournament and was a two-time junior college champion for Iowa Central, winning the 134-pound title as a freshman and the 142-pound title as a sophomore. His career record at Northern Iowa was 46-5.
 
Art Weiss-(with Norm Palovcsik) No wrestling coach in Pennsylvania state high school history has experienced the overall success that Art Weiss enjoyed in his 25-year tenure at Clearfield High School.  He set standards and records that still exist today, nearly fifty years since his retirement from coaching in 1959. Art Weiss is considered by many experts to be the "father of Pennsylvania high school wrestling coaches" despite having never wrestled competitively in high school or college. Art's teams amassed a record of 184 wins, 37 losses and three ties for a .832 winning percentage. Weiss coached 25 different wrestlers to 31 individual state championships, a state record that still stands today. Coach Weiss, 99, was married for 70 years to his wife, Irene, until her passing in 2006 and they have one son, Arthur Jr., a member of the 1957-59 teams.
