Quotes - Second session Athlete Quotes No. 9 Ruben DeLeon of Cal-State Bakersfield, 125 pounds (after avenging two losses to Ben Vombaur of Boise State and drawing Stephen Abas tomorrow) : "Wrestling Abas will be tough; it's my chance to beat the best." No. 2 Jody Strittmatter of Iowa, 125 pounds "I feel good. I would have liked to get the pin, but I just didn't dominate. This place, Carver Hawkeye Arena, gets me pumped. I like my chances." No. 8 Charles Walker, Oklahoma State, 141 pounds "I felt good. I wanted to wrestle better than before. I want to be a national champion. It's the most important thing to me." Unseeded Mike Zadick, Iowa, 149 pounds (after upsetting No. 1 Reggie Wright of Oklahoma State) "I said all year, I need the right warmup. The switch is on here. He was winning, but I hit it hard to win. I had a hip toss but went the other way. I love the crowd. They keep me in it. I should have pinned him. This was a huge spark." No. 1 Donny Pritzlaff, Wisconsin, 165 pounds "Today I wrestled well, a little cautious. I hope to have a better day tomorrow. It's the hardest I've trained in my career. I just have to stay on top of the gameplan to win." No. 2 Otto Olson, Michigan, 174 pounds "I'm wrestling good. I like being the No. 2 seed. I like being the underdog. It's one match at a time now. I know what I've got to do." No. 9 Nick Preston, Ohio State, 197 pounds "I kept good position. I was able to counter his last shot. Being seeded ninth, I use it as motivation. I'm not fifth place in the Big Ten. I feel like Ohio State can look to me as a sparkplug. It's a breakout year." No. 2 Tommy Rowlands, Ohio State, heavyweight "I've just got to win and move forward. I've got to get the butterflies out. I have basically given up on stall calls for heavyweights. I want the national title." Coaches quotes Jim Zalesky, Univ. of Iowa "We needed a day like this to keep in the hunt. Zadick, Shirk, Smith had to help and they did today." "Zadick started to wrestle. When he is in his offense, he wins. He still has a tough day tommorow. Zadick is a gamer, he's used to it." "All week, our seniors have been wanting to go out with a bang. We are just taking care of ourselves. We are not worrying about Oklahoma State or Minnesota, unless we wrestle them." Lincoln McIlravy, Univ. of Iowa assistant coach "Zadick trains hard all year. The light switch is on and it will stay on. The Iowa guys are not here to be All-Americans; they are here to win it. If they lose, they will come back and take third." Former Iowa Coach Dan Gable, after Zadick's win "There was a crucial flurry in the second period for about 30-40 seconds. Zadick quit wrestling too, but picked it up a notch to win. Iowa really needed that one." J Robinson, Univ. of Minnesota "We lost a couple of tight ones. I didn't like the call on the leg cradle earlier. It's tough to get a call here in Iowa. We're still in it. We're wrestling hard." John Smith, Oklahoma State "We are still in the team race. We need to have some upsets. Wright shut it down a little and paid the price. We did get an upset back with Shane Roller." Mark Cody, Oklahoma State assistant coach (about whether 197 Mark Munoz noticed the loss by rival Zach Thompson of Iowa State) "Sure, Mark noticed Thompson's loss, but there are so many guys out there. He just has to win the match in front of him through Saturday."
