CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Wisconsin's Jesse Thielke walked out of the UNI-Dome a year ago as the winner of USA Wrestling's Ultimate Dominator Award.

But another title eluded him after he fell just short of winning a title in the Cadet division following an 11-9 loss in the finals to Ryan Mango.

Thielke made sure late Saturday night that history didn't repeat itself.

In a battle of two of the most dominant young wrestlers on the USA Wrestling circuit, Thielke started quickly before holding off Florida's Clark Glass 5-4 in the Cadet 119-pound finals at the ASICS/USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals.

"The key was I got ahead early," Thielke said. "I've definitely improved a lot since last year. It was a pretty big win for me. It means a lot to come back and get in the finals and win it this year."

Thielke, a past Triple Crown winner in the Schoolboy division, scored a quick early takedown with a body lock and trip en route to taking control. The lead grew to 5-0 late in the second period when Thielke countered a shot attempt by Glass and eventually won a scramble near the edge of the mat.

Glass, who owns numerous USA Wrestling national titles, escaped in the closing seconds of the second period to draw within 5-1. Thielke nearly turned Glass in the third period before Glass eventually came back to gain a reversal with just under a minute left. Glass tried valiantly to turn Thielke and picked up a stalling point late in the match, but ended up a point short.

"It was a tough match," said Thielke, who won Cadet Nationals in Greco-Roman in 2007 and placed second in freestyle. "We were both so sweaty that everything was slipping. I couldn't grip anything."

Montana twins Valyen and Jade Rauser will return home with a gold and a silver medal from the weekend. Valyen beat Bo Bettison of Nevada 6-3 in the Cadet 105 finals. Jade fell 6-3 in the Cadet 98 finals to Terrel Wilbourn of Missouri. Jade had knocked off Triple Crown winner Hayden Zillmer of Minnesota on Friday.

Valyen Rauser placed second in this event last year. He won his second Cadet Nationals title. He won Cadets in Greco-Roman last year in Fargo, N.D. He also was second in freestyle. Jade was second in Fargo in both Greco-Roman and freestyle in 2007.

Dylan Ness, younger brother of Minnesota Gophers standout Jayson Ness, won by fall in the Cadet finals at 130. Ness was a repeat champion in the Cadet division after winning the title at 112 in 2007.

Among the champions in Juniors was University of Nebraska recruit Josh Ihnen at 189. Ihnen is from Sheldon, Iowa. Wisconsin's Zak Saevre won by fall in just 42 seconds in the finals at heavyweight. Wisconsin's Cody Friemoth won by a 15-0 technical fall in the finals at 160.

Competition in the four Kids divisions - Bantam, Midget, Novice and Schoolboy - will conclude on Sunday. Wrestling in the Veterans division will take place on Sunday.

UNI-Dome fills up with 22 mats in use

It's quite a scene when you enter the UNI-Dome for the Folkstyle Nationals and you look down and see wrestlers from all sizes, shapes and ages rolling around on the 22 mats in the spacious UNI-Dome.

The UNI-Dome, located on the University of Northern Iowa campus, continues to be regarded as one of the top wrestling venues in the country. The UNI-Dome has hosted the National Duals for all the collegiate divisions the past three seasons and will be the host for the event again in 2009.

The UNI-Dome also served as the site of the 1997 NCAA Division I Championships. That was the year when the Iowa Hawkeyes crowned five champions and set the scoring record in Waterloo native Dan Gable's final season as Iowa's head coach.

Two-time World bronze medalist Harry Lester scheduled to appear Sunday

Harry Lester, a two-time World bronze medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling, will be USA Wrestling's special guest on Sunday at the Folkstyle Nationals.

Lester, ranked No. 1 in the U.S. Senior level in Greco-Roman at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., will pose with award winners and sign autographs during the final day of competition at the UNI-Dome.

Lester has made the last three U.S. World Teams and is favored to land a spot on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team. Lester played a key role on the 2007 U.S. squad that won the team title at the World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.
