Olympians Abas and Cormier among freestyle qualifiers from Northwest Olympic Regional Trials

BATTLEGROUND, WASH . - Two members of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team, silver medalist Stephen Abas (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and fourth-place finisher Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) were among the 10 athletes to qualify for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials with victories at the Northwest Regional Olympic Trials in Battleground, Wash.

Both were competing up one weight class from where they normally wrestle.

Abas won the 60 kg/132 lbs. division, defeating Tyler Phillips (Salem, Ore./Orange Crush) by technical fall in the finals, 7-0, 6-0. A big win for Abas was in the semifinals where he defeated past NCAA runner-up Dylan Long (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids), 3-0, 4-0.

Cormier won the 120 kg/264.5 lbs. division, defeated nationally ranked Les Sigman (Omaha, Neb./Sunkist Kids), 6-0, 2-0 in the finals.

Cormier was one of three Gator WC stars who attended Oklahoma State and train in Stillwater, Okla. to win titles at the Northwest Regional Olympic Trials. Also capturing gold medals were Zack Esposito at 66 kg /145.5 lbs. and Chris Pendleton at 84 kg/185 lbs.

Esposito won a competitive finals match, stopping past World Team Trials runner-up Jared Frayer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) in the finals, 2-2, 4-1.

Pendleton won the deepest weight division in the tournament, stopping Bryce Hasseman (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) in the finals, 3-1, 2-0. Four wrestlers in the division are ranked in the top 10 of their weight class in TheMat.com athlete rankings.

Two members of the U.S. Army team, stationed at Fort Carson, Colo., were able to win titles and qualify for the Olympic Trials, Philip Simpson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 145.5 pounds and Willie Parks (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

The other champion was Grant Nakamura (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 121 pounds.
