48 kg/105.5 lbs. - Clarissa Chun, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids), gold medal
"I just didn't think I wrestled well the whole tournament. I'll take the win."
(to win in Colorado Springs)
"It feels great. This is my second hometown. I live here in Colorado Springs. To win a big tournament like the Pan American Championships is great. I am able to wrestle in front of family and friends."
It was a short tournament. Three matches. But they are tough for me. I had to overcome it mentally.
51 kg/112.25 lbs. - Patricia Miranda, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids), gold medal
(On the first match back)
"It felt awesome. It wasn't perfect. It was good to put a singlet on and represent the U.S. I don't think you ever forget what it feels like, but emotionally you need to be revived.
This was a good warm-up. Next week we head to Belarus and I should get a lot of good matches in. I might get to wrestle the current world Champion; Ukraine said they would be there.
I just have a sense of gratefulness. It has been five intense months of rehab to get here. Everyone at the OTC has really made it possible."
(On sticking to her strategy in the match)
"I pretty much stuck with it. I wanted to get the feel of it back. My coach, Levi, sometimes has me work on specific things. Today there were a couple things we were focused on but he said that if I got on top to just go for it."
55 kg/121 lbs. - Marcie Van Dusen, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids), silver medal
"I think I did fairly well. But I have to put it behind, learn from my mistakes and go on from there. "
(about the challenges trying to finish her shots against Verbeek)
I will have to watch some video. I don't know. I feel I am the best wrestler. She got the better of me today. It won't happen again. I am always a third-period wrestler. She was waiting for me to take my shots. I needed more setups for my shots."
"I look back to where I was a year ago when I prepared to wrestle her. I was going to be excited if I won. Here, I expected to beat her. I am a much better wrestler than I was a year ago."
59 kg/130 lbs. - Tatiana Padilla, LaVerne, Calif. (Sunkist Kids), gold medal
(On her performance today)
"In the first match, I stuck to what I know and really wrestled how I should. Before the match my coach told me to look for the front headlock and to keep my feet moving. I just went over what he said.
"She was the tougher opponent that I really focused on."
63 kg/138.75 lbs. - Tori Adams, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids), bronze medal
(On today's competition)
"I came out a little slow. I felt good in warm-ups but didn't wrestle as well. I was able to regroup, refocus, and performed more to my abilities in the second match."
(On changes she made in the second match)
"I stayed in the pocket and was more aggressive. At first, I think nerves affected me. In the second match I didn't think I just wrestled. When you think too much you can get behind in the match."
67 kg/147.5 lbs. - Elena Pirozkhov, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Gator WC), gold medal
"It was only one match. It was hard to wait all day. I spent it napping. I never wrestled her before. I was still nervous. I was tentative. I didn't do a lot of shots."
"I strained my MCL. This is my first competition for a few months. Especially since coming here to train, my wrestling has improved tremendously with Coach Izzy (Izboinikov). I still have to work on my mental focus and not getting so nervous for my matches."
72 kg/158.5 lbs. - Stephany Lee, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids)
"I started off a little slow. I picked it up and did what I meant to do."
(about facing tough opponents)
I lost to Brazil last year. That was a good win for me. With the Canadian, I have thrown her twice for five. She got better, but I got better, too. She couldn't stop me. There are a few things I need to tweak. But overall, I feel good about my wrestling."
Terry Steiner, Women's National Coach
"Overall, I think we had a good effort. We wrestled hard. We got our offense going. We controlled the tempo, the tieups and the pace of the match. I was pleased with the team."
(about Marcie Van Dusen's finals bout)
"I had no complaints on how Marcie wrestled the match. We had a plan. She executed it. She go to her leg many times. She has to work on her finishes. We came up on the short side. We have to move forward. We have other chances to qualify."
"I thought Stephany Lee had a good tournament. Tatiana Padilla did well for somebody so young. Clarissa Chun found a way to win. She didn't feel good today, but she got through it. That is what you have to do. I thought Elena Pirozkhov competed well for a young wrestler in a big tournament. It was Patricia Miranda's first match back. She was typical Patricia. She controlled the entire match. We wrestled well all the way through. Tori Adams came back through to win the third place match. Our sights are now on the U.S. Nationals, and the athletes trying to earn the No. 1 spot for the Trials.
