COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - There is no shortage of star power in the Greco-Roman heavyweight division at the Dave Schultz Memorial International.
There are two World champions and an Olympic silver medalist in the Greco-Roman field at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
American Dremiel Byers, a 2002 World champion and 2007 World bronze medalist, advanced to the semifinals in Saturday's first session. He will meet 2004 Olympic silver medalist Georgiy Tzurtsumia of Kazakhstan in the second session on Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Cuba's Mijial Lopez, the 2005 and 2007 World champion, advanced to the other semifinal where he will face Ivan Ivanov of Bulgaria. Lopez edges Byers in the finals of the 2007 Pan American Games.
American T.C. Dantzler continued his quest to win titles on back-to-back days at this year's Schultz event. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC), who won the Greco-Roman title at 74 kg/163 lbs. on Friday, moved into the semifinals at 84 kg/185 lbs. on Saturday.
2004 Olympic silver medalist Stephen Abas (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) dropped a 1-1, 1-0 quarterfinal freestyle decision to Japan's Yasuhiro Inaba at 55 kg/121 lbs. Abas has not wrestled in nearly two years. Inaba was a Junior World silver medalist in 2005.
Abas scored the first takedown of the match, but was unable to score again. Down 1-0 late in the second period, Abas shot in on a leg attack but was unable to finish as Inaba countered effectively.
2006 World freestyle champion Bill Zadick (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gtor WC) won the first period of his quarterfinal match against Japan's Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. But Zadick suffered an injury late in the period and had to default the match.
