USA Wrestling has named its head and assistant coaches for the 2001 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team, head coach Joe DeMeo of Niskayuna, N.Y. and assistant coach Andy Seras of Sandy Hook, Conn.    The U.S. Greco-Roman World Team will compete at the 2001 World Championships of Wrestling, to be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Sept. 26-29. The team will be determined at the World Team Trials, set for Cincinnati, Ohio, June 22-24.    "My first objective is to get the athletes and staff to focus on the World Championships being very important and being hosted in our country," said DeMeo. "Often, in the year after an Olympics, there's a natural letdown because of the great effort during an Olympic year. I am hoping we can refocus effectively and quickly, so we can have the performance we are capable of and our country deserves. We have the talent and the experience to succeed."    "It's very exciting to be the World Team Coach, and to work with athletes and National Team Coach Steve Fraser," said DeMeo. "It is most gratifying to have Andy Seras as my assistant. I've known and worked with him for over 20 years. The event in New York City will be great. It can be the best ever held. Now the task is to show up with our best team and make the most of the home field advantage."    DeMeo has had numerous head and assistant coaching assignments for U.S. teams during the past three decades. DeMeo was the head coach of the 1994 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team, which tied for seventh in the team standings and featured one medalist. He served as head coach of the 1999 Pan American Games team, which featured two individual champions and placed second in the team standings.    He was the assistant coach of the 1991 Pan American Games team, which placed second in the team standings, and included four champions and 10 medalists. DeMeo was the coach for the U.S. Greco-Roman World Cup teams in 1980, 1984 and 1987. DeMeo was the head coach of the 1989 Pan American Championships team, which placed second in the team standings. He also coached the U.S. Junior World Teams in 1977 and 1983.    He was on the coaching staff of four Olympic teams (1976, 1980, 1988, 1992) and has been an assistant coach with a number of U.S. World teams. He coached at the 1985 U.S. Olympic Festival and has taken numerous U.S. teams on tours to foreign nations.    DeMeo has been coaching on the national level since 1971, and is currently a club coach with the New York Athletic Club. Among the other clubs he has coached are the San Francisco Peninsula Grapplers, the Adirondack Three-Style Wrestling Association and the Jets USA. DeMeo has coached over 280 national champion athletes on all age levels, including more than 80 Senior national titles. DeMeo's athletes have won World medals on the Senior, FILA Junior, Junior and Cadet levels.    He coached at the State University of New York at Albany for 18 years. He was previously the head coach at Stanford University for seven years (1970-77). DeMeo also served as an assistant coach at Michigan State from 1967-70. He coached over 35 All-Americans on the college level.    He attended Cornell Univ., where he was an Eastern placewinner for the wrestling team. DeMeo also wrestled both freestyle and Greco-Roman on the national level in the mid-1960's.     Seras serves as an assistant wrestling coach at Div. I Sacred Heart Univ., and was previously an assitant coach at SUNY-Albany. He has coached a number of U.S. teams on international tours. He is a club coach with the Atlas Wrestling Club and the Sunkist Kids. He has also served on the coaching staff of the Connecticut Junior National Team in 1999 and 2000.    Seras was a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team. He was the 1991 Pan American Games champion, and placed second in the 1995 Pan American Games. Seras laimed a gold medal at the 1994 World Cup. He competed on four U.S. World teams, placing ninth in the 1989 World Championships and 10th in the 1990 World Championships. Seras won five U.S. National titles and made the finals of the U.S. Greco-Roman National Championships for 10 straight years.     He competed for SUNY-Albany, where he was a 1985 NCAA Div. III national champion. He is originally from Niskayuna, N.Y., where he was fourth in the New York state high school meet. Seras placed twice in the Junior World Championships.     Seras competed for DeMeo in college at SUNY-Albany and throughout his international Greco-Roman career for the Adirondack TWA, Jets USA and the New York AC.    The United States is a World power in men's Greco-Roman wrestling. The United States won three medals at the 1996 Olympic Games and three medals at the 2000 Olympic Games. The U.S. placed third in the medal count and unofficial standings at the 2000 Olympics. Rulon Gardner, an Olympic Greco-Roman gold medalist in 2000, is the most celebrated American champion from the Sydney Games.
