Clarion University wrestler Hadley Harrison (So. McKean/General McLane), a 149-pounder, was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "Wrestler of the Week today for his performance last week against #14 ranked Edinboro.

Harrison won his individual match over Edinboro's Daryl Cocozzo 3-1, registering a takedown with 7 seconds left in the match to get the win. The win raised Harrison's record to 14-4 this season and avenged an earlier 3-2 loss to Cocozzo in the PSAC Championships. Cocozzo won the PSAC title at 149.

Harrison is a co-captain of the Golden Eagle wrestling team for 2007-2008. Last year, as a true freshman, he posted a 21-19 overall record, placed 5th at PSAC's and 6th at EWL's at 149-pounds. He is a member of SAAC on campus as well as FCA.

Harrison is the son of Daniel and Kathy Harrison of McKean, Pa. Hadley is an Elementary Education major at Clarion.

Iowa's Metcalf, Wisconsin's Herbst honored by Big Ten

No. 1 Metcalf earns his second consecutive weekly honor after winning twice last week in Big Ten duals.  Iowa opened the conference season against Ohio State on Jan. 18 with a 24-10 win.  In the victory, Metcalf defeated No. 5 Lance Palmer with a 5-3 decision at 149.  In a dual with Penn State, Metcalf notched his second win of the week by pinning No. 6 Bubba Jenkins in 5:33 to help lead the Hawkeyes to another dual win.  The Davison, Mich., native is now 18-1 in collegiate matches, 13-1 in duals and has won 15 straight matches.  

This is Metcalf's second career weekly laurel.

Herbst went 2-0 over the weekend against ranked opponents as Wisconsin wrapped up its non-conference schedule.  No. 6 Herbst pinned No. 17 David Bertolino of Iowa State at 197 pounds on Jan. 18.  It was Herbst's 11th pin of the season.  On Jan. 20, with the Badgers trailing 15-12 heading into the 197 bout against No. 18 Oklahoma, Herbst beat undefeated No. 3 Joel Flaggert in a 4-2 decision to help pave the way for a Wisconsin win.  He now stands at 20-1 overall on the year to lead the Badgers.  This is Herbst's second career weekly accolade.

Northern Iowa's Anderson honored by Western Wrestling Conference

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - University of Northern Iowa 197-pounder Andrew Anderson has been named the Western Wrestling Conference's Wrestler of the Week as announced by league officials.

Anderson (Sioux City, Iowa/East HS) recorded two falls in leading the Panthers to a pair of WWC dual wins over Wyoming (40-0) and Northern Colorado (36-6). Anderson recorded a third-period fall over Wyoming's Dan Barrone at the 6:49 mark of their match. Anderson then tallied a first-period fall over UNC's Patrick Carey at the 1:22 mark of their match.

Anderson improved to 13-8 this season and is ranked No. 18 in the Amateur Wrestling News and No. 19 in the W.I.N. rankings at 197 pounds. 

It marks the third time this season a UNI wrestler has earned the honor. UNI's Moza Fay has twice been named the league's top wrestler.

The Western Wrestling Conference is comprised of seven schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley State and Wyoming.

Central Michigan's Stewart honored by Mid-American Conference

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan University junior Trevor Stewart (Canton, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central HS) has been selected the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week.

Stewart, ranked 11th nationally at 165 pounds, posted a 5-3 decision over No. 2-ranked Eric Tannenbaum in the Chippewas' 21-13 win over Michigan on Sunday. Trailing 2-1, Stewart rode Tannenbaum for the entire second period, then scored an escape to open the third. He took Tannenbaum down later in the period to take a 4-2 lead, and his 2:06 riding time advantage accounted for the final point in a 5-3 decision. 

The second-ranked Tannenbaum is the highest ranked wrestler Stewart has defeated in his career. Stewart's decision also gave CMU an 11-10 lead in the team score, an advantage the Chippewas would not relinquish over the final four bouts. 

Stewart earns the conference's weekly honor for the first time in his career. He is the fifth different Chippewa to be named MAC Wrestler of the Week this season.

CMU (9-2 overall) opens the conference portion of its schedule Saturday, visiting Eastern Michigan at 6 p.m.  

Hofstra's Ruggirello honored by CAA

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - Hofstra sophomore wrestler Lou Ruggirello, who posted a 5-0 record at the Colonial Athletic Association Duals this past weekend, has been named the CAA Wrestler of the Week, for the second consecutive week,  for all competition between January 15 and 22.

Ruggirello, a native of Walden, New York, swept through all five of his matches last Friday and Saturday, recording two wins by fall, two tech falls and a major decision. The sixth-ranked wrestler in the country at 133 pounds, pinned Zach Cunliffe from Rider in 2:56, and Old Dominion's Kyle Hutter in 1:15; posted identical 17-0 tech falls over Binghamton's Michael Kleeman and Boston University's Ryan Goddu; and a 10-1 major decision over Joe Coughlin from George Mason. He helped boost Hofstra's conference dual match undefeated streak to 59 matches including 56 consecutive victories. 

The Valley Central High School graduate has now won 11 consecutive matches to boost his record to 27-4 on the season including a 16-0 mark in dual matches and a 5-0 record in the CAA. Ruggirello shares the CAA Wrestler of the Week honor with Kevin Bidelspach from Campbell, who also posted a 5-0 record last weekend at the CAA Duals. 

Old Dominion's James Nicholson, a 125-pounder from Des Moines, Iowa (Theodore Roosevelt High), was named the CAA Rookie of the Week. He went 4-1 at the CAA Duals last weekend.  

Nebraska's Browne honored by Big 12

Lincoln - The Big 12 Conference announced Monday that Husker junior Brandon Browne has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for his performances in competitions from Jan. 14-20. Browne defeated second-ranked Brandon Mason of Oklahoma State 2-1 last Sunday as the Huskers topped the Cowboys 22-13 in Oklahoma City, Okla. Browne, a native of Plattsmouth, Neb., is currently ranked sixth at 174 pounds.

Browne felt out Mason in the first period until he capitalized on an opening and scored a takedown with eight seconds left. Mason chose down in the second and scored an escape 25 seconds in. Browne chose the neutral position in the third, but neither was able to score a point as Browne held on for the 2-1 decision. Browne's win broke a 10-10 tie as the Huskers never relinquished the lead after Browne's win.

Browne improves to 24-2 on the year, including 9-1 in duals. Browne has scored 35 dual points for NU while allowing just three. He is second on the squad in bonus-point wins with seven major decisions, four technical falls and two pins.

Browne and the Huskers resume action on Feb. 2 as NU host No. 11 Missouri for Alumni Night at 7 p.m. in the NU Coliseum.

Maryland's Taylor, North Carolina's Ramirez honored by ACC

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland's Hudson Taylor, now a four-time league honoree in 2007-08, and North Carolina's Vincent Ramirez have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Wrestlers of the Week.  In dual matches against ACC opponents last week, Taylor and Ramirez recorded impressive pin victories, each stopping their opponents in the contests' opening minutes to propel their respective teams to valuable league wins.

Taylor, a redshirt-sophomore from Pennington, N.J., faced Kevin O'Connor of Virginia Tech in College Park, Md., Saturday afternoon.  As he had done 13 times previously during the season, Taylor claimed the win by fall 2:32 into the match, as the Terps went on to prevail 33-8 over the Hokies.  Now 21-2 this year, Taylor has won four matches in a row and five of the last six by fall.  Currently ranked as the No. 7 197-pound wrestler in the nation, he has not lost a match since dropping a 4-3 decision in the final of the Body Bar Systems Invitational on Nov. 17.  

Ramirez, who competes in the 149-pound weight class for the Tar Heels, was just as impressive in a dual meet against Duke on Jan. 17.  Taking on the Blue Devils' Mike Bell, the junior from Durham, N.C., brought the bout to an end with a pin at the 0:57 mark, earning six points as the Heels went on to post a 33-6 team win.  Ramirez is now 11-7 for the season, with a 5-3 overall record in dual meets and a 2-0 mark in league competition.

Both teams will continue to ease into conference competition this weekend, as Taylor and the Terps host NC State and Duke on Saturday afternoon, and Ramirez and the Heels hit the road to face Virginia on Friday night and Virginia Tech on Saturday.
