As an extension of the National Coaches Education Program, USA Wrestling is partnering with the American Red Cross in an attempt to encourage its member coaches to become First Aid Certified.
First Aid for Coaches, a component of Sport Safety Training, is a Web-based course developed by the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis and the United States Olympic Committee.
"In our Bronze Clinics, we encourage our coaches to become certified in First Aid. With the Red Cross developing an on-line course designed specifically for coaches, we thought it would be best to promote this opportunity," said Tony Black, Manager of Grassroots Development for USA Wrestling.
The course teaches American Red Cross First Aid in the context of sport and the prevention of sport-related injuries. The participant will learn about becoming a more responsible coach and safely returning the wrestler to the mat. The course will take four hours.
Course participants will receive the Sport Safety Training handbook, a user-friendly quick reference tool that can be placed in a First Aid kit for easy access in an emergency.
"Our intention behind this partnership is that our wrestling coaches will be able to make responsible decisions when dealing with injuries and their athletes," said Black. "We're grateful that the Red Cross is meeting the needs of our coaches."
The cost of the course is $45, and the First Aid for Coaches Certification is valid for 3 years.
