USA Wrestling has updated its new "Bout of the Week" which has been posted as a video file on-line on TheMat.com Audio/Video website .
The featured match this week is the 2007 Sam Hazewinkel vs. Spenser Mango men's Greco-Roman championship match at 55 kg/121 lbs. at the 2007 Sunkist Kids International Open in Chandler, Ariz.
The Sunkist Kids International is considered a showcase of emerging talents each year, as many of the nation's best wrestlers compete in respected early season international event. Often, the tournament showcases the young stars who will soon be earning spots on U.S. World and Olympic Teams.
Although neither Sam Hazewinkel or Spenser Mango have made any U.S. Senior World Teams, many expect that they could make a number of them in the future. Both are young and talented and motivated. Their showdown at the Sunkist Kids International, with the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials only months away, could have even more importance.
Hazewinkel has been a major talent in the Olympic styles going back to his days as a high school in Pensacola, Fla. The son of two-time Greco-Roman Olympian Dave Hazewinkel, Sam was a double-champion at the Junior Nationals in 2002 and a three-time Florida state champion. What made him special was that while still in high school, Hazewinkel placed fifth at the Senior World Team Trials, already displaying his skills in the classic style.
He attended the Univ. of Oklahoma, and continued to compete nationally and internationally while also pursuing a Div. I college career. As a Sooner, wrestling for Jack Spates, he was a four-time All-American. Hazewinkel placed third in the NCAA his first three seasons and was second in the NCAA as a senior in 2007.
Meanwhile, Hazewinkel continued to rise in the rankings on the Senior level in Greco-Roman. In 2005 and in 2007, both while still a college student, Hazewinkel won U.S. Senior National titles. Both seasons, he was defeated in the finals of the World Team Trials by veteran Lindsey Durlacher, who has made the last three U.S. World Teams.
After Hazewinkel completed his college career, he began to start attending major international events that he did not enter while still competing in folkstyle. He was third in the 2007 Pan American Championships last spring. Hazewinkel has also spent a tremendous amount of time improving his craft at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Mango was a high school star in St. Louis, Mo., winning two state titles and placing twice at the Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman.
He has truly made his mark through the U.S. Olympic Education Center's Greco-Roman program at Northern Michigan Univ., competing for head coach Ivan Ivanov and assistant coach Jim Gruenwald. Mango is a college wrestler, but he only competes in international Greco-Roman.
Mango first made big waves in USA Wrestling age-group programs, winning numerous national titles on the FILA Junior and University levels. He was successful in making a number of U.S. World Teams. In 2005, he was seventh in the University Worlds and did not place at the Junior Worlds. In 2006, he was the University World champion and won a bronze medal at the Junior Worlds.
Using an exciting variety of throws, especially from the reverse lift position, Mango has also climbed the Senior rankings. In 2006, Mango was second at the U.S. Nationals, losing a very close finals match to Durlacher. In 2007, he fell to fifth at the U.S. Nationals, but made the finals of the World Team Trials, losing to Durlacher in the championship series.
Mango and Hazewinkel had little difficulty making the finals at the Sunkist International, with Mango winning two bouts and Hazewinkel taking three matches prior to the gold-medal round. In the championship finals, the match was hotly contested, with Mango winning the first period, 4-0 and Hazewinkel claiming the second 5-0. The deciding third period went to Hazewinkel, 4-1, giving him the edge in this battle of young talents.
Hazewinkel made news the next day at Sunkist, placing second in the freestyle division, losing only to veteran Danny Felix in the finals. While Hazewinkel is concentrating on Greco-Roman, but still has tremendous skills in all styles of the sport.
Wrestling fans look forward to seeing Hazewinkel and Mango during the 2008 Olympic year, as they attempt to unseat Durlacher and earn a spot on the U.S. team going to Beijing, China.
