CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - University of Northern Iowa 165-pounder Moza Fay has been named the Western Wrestling Conference's Wrestler of the Week as announced by league officials. Fay (Anamosa, Iowa) went 4-1 in the 165-pound Elite division bracket at the 2007 Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb. Fay placed second in the tournament falling to defending national champion Mark Perry in the final. Fay led 4-3 with 2:40 of riding time before Perry was able to rally and score a fall at the 5:51 mark of the championship match. Fay posted wins over Iowa's Mike Fahrer (12-2), Iowa Central's Terry Overton (18-1), Air Force's Stephen Crozier (13-2) and Minnesota's Scott Glasser (5-2). Fay is now 7-1 on the season and ranked No. 4 in the nation at 165 pounds by W.I.N. Magazine. The Western Wrestling Conference is comprised of seven schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley State and Wyoming. Others nominated: Air Force - Derek Gillespie North Dakota State - Kenny Moenkedick Northern Colorado - Tony Mustari Utah Valley State - Sam Allen Wyoming - Shane Onufer Penn State's Strayer honored by Big Ten STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State Nittany Lion wrestler Jake Strayer (South Fork, Pa.) has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week for the week ending on Nov. 18. Strayer, a junior 141-pounder, shares the honor with Wisconsin's Dallas Herbst. Strayer, who entered last Saturday's dual with Hofstra ranked No. 7 nationally at 141, nearly pinned No. 2 Charles Griffin before coasting to a convincing 6-1 win over the returning national semifinalist. The win helped spur No. 10 Penn State on to a 28-11 win over No. 12 Hofstra. The three-time Academic All-Big Ten pick was an All-American for Penn State last year at 133 but has moved up to 141 and has fared well so far this year, sporting a 2-0 record. Strayer is also a co-captain on this year's Nittany Lion squad for head coach Troy Sunderland. The weekly honor is Penn State's first of the year and the first since Aaron Anspach garnered the award on Feb. 7 of last year. Wisconsin's Herbst honored by Big Ten Wisconsin junior Dallas Herbst was named the Big Ten Conference's Co-Wrestler of the Week after going 5-0 in Ithaca, N.Y., last weekend. Herbst, a Winneconne, Wis., native, captured the Wisconsin victory in its dual against No. 8 Cornell Friday, Nov. 16, by pinning Matt Panasevich in 6:44 during the final bout of the evening. With the pin, the No. 11 Badgers edged out the Big Red 21-18. It was also the 33rd pin of Herbst's career, which moved him into second all-time on UW's career falls list. On Saturday Herbst won the 197 lbs. division at the Body Bar Systems Invite. He pinned three-straight opponents to earn a spot in the championship match and beat Maryland's Hudson Taylor, 4-3 for the first-place finish. Herbst now has 36 career pins and is 11 falls behind UW's career leader, Lee Kemp. This is the second Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor for Herbst and he shares this week's accolade with Penn State's Jake Strayer. Herbst was also honored by the conference on Jan. 10, 2007 after he went 4-0 at the Lonestar Duals. This is also the first Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor for Wisconsin since current junior Zach Tanelli won the award on Jan. 24, 2007. Maryland's Haines honored by ACC GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland's Josh Haines has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week for his stellar performance at the Body Bar Systems Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y. Haines, who wrestles in the 184-pound weight class for the Terrapins, won four matches over the weekend, earning an individual title and moving to 4-1 overall for the year. In his first match, Haines registered a 15-0 technical fall win over a wrestler from Cornell, the No. 8-ranked team in the nation. He followed that up with his most impressive win of the weekend over 16th-ranked Eric Chine of Kent State. In that match, Haines recorded his first pin of the season in just 2:40. Rounding out the tournament, he moved on to record a 4-1 decision over a wrestler from Buffalo and another pin, at just 2:41, against a Cornell wrestler. With his performance, Haines helped the Terps to a third-place finish at the event. This coming Saturday, November 24, Haines and the Terps will travel to Troy, N.Y., for matches against No. 5 Michigan, Appalachian State, and No. 9 Central Michigan. The day will open against the Wolverines at 12:00 p.m. and will conclude will match-ups against Appalachian State and Central Michigan at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
