BAKU, Azerbaijan - The United States Greco-Roman Team already has clinched its best finish ever for an American team at the World Championships.

Now it's just a matter of whether the U.S. team flies home with a gold or a silver trophy.

According to the FILA Website, the U.S. and Russia are tied 29-29 entering the final session of the World Championships on Wednesday night at the Heydar Aliyev Sport and Exhibition Complex.

Russian heavyweight Khasan Boraev is in the finals and can score one more team point with a win over Cuba's Mijial Lopez in the finals. American Dremiel Byers will wrestle for the bronze and would score two team points with a win.

If the FILA tabulations are correct, a Byers win would give the U.S. the team title.

No matter what happens tonight, no U.S. team has fared this well in Greco-Roman at the World Championships. The Americans have twice finished third in the team race at the Worlds, including last year. The U.S. finished second in the World Cup earlier this year.

The U.S. was in the mix to win the team title despite being without 2006 World Champion Joe Warren in the lineup. The Americans also were in the mix despite not qualifying three of the seven weight classes here for the 2008 Olympics. The U.S. will have three more events where it can qualify those classes.

It was a rough start to the men's freestyle competition for the U.S, as Henry Cejudo (55 kg/121 lbs.) and Mike Zadick (60 kg/132 lbs.) both lost in the first round and failed to place in the top eight. The U.S. will have three more events where it can try to qualify those weight classes for the Olympics.

Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) dropped a 1-0, 4-0 decision to Iran's Taghi Dadashi in the first round. Cejudo was competing in his first World Championships. The Iranian lost his next match, eliminating Cejudo from the tournament. Cejudo was unable to generate any offense against the strong defense of Dadashi.

Zadick (Solon, Iowa/Gator WC), a returning World silver medalist, fell to Sahit Prizreni of Albania in the opening round. Zadick nearly received a chance to wrestle back when Prizeni made the semifinals. But Prizeni, who wrestles for the New York AC, lost in the semis. He needed to make the finals to give Zadick a chance to wrestle back.

Zadick led 1-0 late in the first period before Prizreni took him down with a duck-under maneuver late in the period. Nobody scored in the first two minutes of the second period, sending the match to the leg clinch. Prizreni won the coin flip and quickly dumped Zadick to the mat after starting with Zadick's leg.

The men's freestyle competition continues Thursday with three more Americans set to compete. Taking the mat will be Doug Schwab (Iowa City, Iowa/Gator WC), Joe Heskett (Columbus, Ohio/Gator WC) and Joe Williams (Belvidere, Ill./Sunkist Kids). Schwab competes at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Heskett at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Williams at 84 kg/185 lbs. Schwab and Heskett are first-time World Team members while Williams is a two-time World bronze medalist.
