RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - If Henry Cejudo is the future of American wrestling, the future looked pretty bright Friday night. Cejudo captured his first big international championship by sweeping Cuba's Andy Moreno in the Pan American Games gold-medal match at 55 kg/121 lbs. on Friday night at the Riocentro Sports Complex. United States wrestlers Andy Hrovat and Tommy Rowlands each won silver medals in freestyle while American Doug Schwab won a bronze medal. The 20-year-old Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) beat Moreno for the second straight time this year. And once again he needed to rally in the second period to do it. "I had to find a way to score, I had to find a way to win," Cejudo said. "I keep wrestling hard and just keep coming until the whistle blows. This feels really good to know you are the best in the Americas. It was a great tournament. I had a lot of fun out there competing and being a part of this event. It was a great experience." The first two minutes were scoreless and the first period went to the tiebreaker. Cejudo won the coin flip and quickly finished in the leg clinch, dumping Moreno to the mat to win the period 1-0. "It should have never gone to the tiebreaker," Cejudo said. "I know my coaches are going to be really mad at me about letting that happen. I have to find a way to score." Cejudo trailed 3-2 late in the second period before shooting in on the athletic Moreno's legs. Cejudo came out on top in the scramble that followed and wrapped his arms around both of Moreno's legs to finish off the winning takedown with 12 seconds left. The period ended 3-3, but Cejudo won it because he scored last. Cejudo, the youngest U.S. World Team member in freestyle since 1971, came from behind to beat Moreno earlier this year at the Pan American Championships. "I'm just looking forward to the World Championships - I can't wait," he said. "I want to win a World title this year. That's what I'm working toward." Hrovat (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) was on the verge of winning his gold-medal bout with Canada's Roozbah Banihashemi at 84 kg/185 lbs. Hrovat led in the closing seconds of the third period before the Canadian shot in on a leg attack to secure the winning takedown. Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) dropped a 2-1, 3-0 decision to past World champion Alexis Rodriguez of Cuba in the gold-medal match at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Rodriguez sandwiched a pair of one-point pushouts around a Rowlands takedown to win the first period 2-1. He followed by winning the second period 3-0. Schwab (Iowa City, Iowa/Gator WC) outlasted Venezuela's Ricardo Roberty in three periods in the bronze-medal match at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Schwab fell behind 3-0 but recovered quickly to win the first period 4-3. He dropped the second period after it was tied 1-1, but bounced back once again to win the decisive period 1-0. Schwab fell to eventual Pan Am Games gold medalist Geandry Garzon of Cuba in two straight periods in the semifinals. Garzon was a World bronze medalist in 2006. "Instead of doing what I do well and coming across and moving the guy, I was kind of waiting for what he was going to do," Schwab said. "You hesitate, especially at this level, your window of opportunity closes in a hurry. I wasn't taking advantage of my opportunities. I was disappointed in my performance overall because I don't think I represented myself near as well as I'm capable of. It's good to wrestle this type of competition and get back on the mat. I know the areas I need to work on. I have two months of good training to get ready for the Worlds." Cejudo, Schwab and Rowlands are members of their first World Team this year. Hrovat was on the 2006 World Team. The U.S. medal count in wrestling now stands at 14 after Day 4 of the five-day competition. All 14 U.S. wrestlers who have entered the competition here have won medals. The final day of competition is set for Saturday with the final three freestyle weight classes set to be contested. World silver medalist Mike Zadick (Solon, Iowa/Gator WC), Joe Heskett (Columbus, Ohio/Gator WC) and Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) are scheduled to wrestle. Zadick competes at 60 kg/132 lbs., Heskett at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Cormier at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Cormier, a four-time World Team member and 2004 Olympian, won the Pan American Games in 2003. Heskett made his first World Team this year. FRIDAY'S PAN AMERICAN GAMES MEDALISTS 55 kg/121 lbs.
