Each day, wrestling journalists on press row at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior Nationals and Accelerade Cadet Nationals will be filing interesting notes from the day's competition. Sunday, July 22 is the final day of Cadet Greco-Roman and day one of Junior Greco-Roman. Peppelman picks right time to shine By Jason Bryant, InterMat http://www.intermatwrestle.com Pennsylvania's Marshall Peppelman picked the right time to hone his Greco-Roman skills. The 140-pound Cadet Greco-Roman Champion wasn't a probable favorite to win the national crown. Why? Peppelman has a few reasons. "I always liked (Greco), but I wasn't too great at it," said Peppelman after his three-period victory over Colorado's Justin Gonzales. "I didn't even win our Pennsylvania states in Greco, I took second." Peppelman was second behind Cody Barrick at the state level. Barrick also placed at 140, finishing seventh. "That had me a little shook up," said Peppelman. "I went to camp and (coach) Cam Plocus taught me a lot of things and I just concentrated on my technique." Apparently so. Two Kyle's from Kansas make a big splash in the Fargo Pool! By Randy Hinderliter, USA Wrestling Kansas http://www.usawks.com I was going to apologize if my loyalty showed too much but bragging on young men from Kansas, just feels too damn good! Two Cadets from Kansas, both made their first trip into the deep waters of Fargo, North Dakota. Both are named Kyle, both are from Wichita, and both are undefeated National Champs. Kyle Detmer, from Bishop Carroll HS was competing in the 152# class. Detmer had a very impressive first experience in Fargo as he only lost one period in racking up 10 wins. The frame he lost was to fellow Kansan, Jordan Brown of Pittsburg, KS who placed 4th. In the finals, Detmer faced Mike Curby from Osseo, Michigan. Detmer defeated Curby by scores of 1-1, 5-2. Detmer scored 4 falls and 3 technical falls. Kyle Caylor is a 215-pounder from Wichita's Northwest HS. This was also Caylor's first trip to Fargo and he too, found the waters … to his liking! Caylor was 8-0 during the tournament. Caylor was matched against Wisconsin's, Alex Polizzi. In both styles during the Cadet duals, Polizzi was undefeated but these weren't the duals. Caylor won the first period, scoring a 5-pointer off of a reverse lift. In the second frame, Caylor only tallied a 3 of his reverse lift but later scored another 3-pointer to secure the technical fall. One of our local fans referred to Detmer as having chimpanzee strength. That's true … but Caylor has gorilla strength. Of course, the expectations now will be greater. We will see if they can pull off the very tough double! Pennsylvania returns to top of Greco standings By Tabitha Wilson, Pennsylvania USA Wrestling www.usapawf.com Pennsylvania traditionally sends out one of the tougher Cadet teams in both Greco-Roman and freestyle at the USA Wrestling Cadet & Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D. This year, the Keystone kids didn't have the most medalist, but got more bang for the buck as six of the 11 Pennsylvania All-Americans reached the finals and four won titles. Three of the titles came in a row as Andrew Alton, Marshall Peppelman and Dirk Cowburn won 135, 140 and 145 consecutively. Heavyweight Evan Craig picked up his fifth fall of the tournament in a finals victory, giving the state its fourth title. Statistically, Pennsylvania placed only 22 percent of their wrestlers (11 out of 34). Three wrestlers were in the top eight for total falls. Joining Craig on the list was Josh Kindig, the runner-up at 119 pounds. Kindig had four falls, as did 130-pound runner-up Dylan Alton. Pennsylvania had 36 pins, the most of any state, outdistancing second-place Wisconsin by 11. The state also picked up 537 classification points, an average of 15 points per wrestler. Illinois was second, picking up 488 points, but only averaging 9.9 points per wrestler. In case you're wondering, five classification points are awarded for a fall, forfeit or disqualification, while four are earned for a technical fall and three for a decision. Wrestlers can earn classification points in a loss if they score a point in a match and do not lose by fall. Bauman dazzles crowd with five-point moves by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling http://www.themat.com Nothing gets a crowd going at a national Greco-Roman tournament like a five-point throw. But it gets even better when a wrestler hits two five-pointers on the way to a national title. Joel Bauman of Minnesota left the crowd buzzing with two big tosses in the 171 pound finals of the Accelerade Cadet Nationals finals against John Eblen of Missouri. In his corner was Dan Chandler, the coach of Minnesota USA Wrestling and one of the greatest Greco-Roman athletes and coaches in history. Chandler said that Bauman reminded him of two-time Olympian and World silver medalist Michial Foy, who lived and trained in Minnesota and was world-known for his throwing skills. But Bauman's explosive throws did not come naturally to him. "He came here last year and went to camp and didn't do very well," said Chandler. "He has had a nice tournament this year. He got a lot of fives all week. He was hitting his gut wrenches and reverse lifts. He didn't lose a period all tournament." "It took a lot of time," said Bauman of his Greco-Roman skill set. "Last year was my first year competing here and I didn't know what to expect. It was hard for me last year." Bauman, who will be a sophomore next year for Kerkhoven-Murdock- Sunburg High School wanted to make up for a disappointing freshman year in high school. He missed much of the season with injury and did not reach his goals. It is a small Class A school in Minnesota in a rural area of the state. "I told myself I would prove to people that I am good, and I can do better at state next year," said Bauman. Chandler helped Bauman to learn the best technique for a tall, lanky wrestler in Greco-Roman, and the result has been lots of big throws, especially this week during the Cadet Nationals. Bauman was dominant on the mat, wrestling with new confidence. "I just got into the zone," said Bauman. "I didn't want (Eblen) to score on me, but he did. I was only scored on twice in the entire tournament." And winning is contagious. "Greco is my favorite style," said Bauman. "It is the most fun."
