U.S. women's freestyle team still going strong after first day of competition at the Yasar Dagu Tournament in Ankara, Turkey, March 2 All five U.S. women's freestyle wrestlers are still alive in competition after the first day at the Yasar Dagu Tournament in Ankara, Turkey, March 2. Jenny Wong (Stillwater, Minn./Sunkist Kids) has not give up a point yet at 112.25 pounds. She won by technical fall, 10-0, over both of her opponents. First over Shtereva of Bulgaria, then Buyauhishig of Mongolia. Wong is currently ranked third in the U.S. and placed third in the 2000 U.S. Nationals. Tina Wilson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) only had one match at 123.25 pounds and she scored a technical fall over Veurun of Turkey, 11-1. Wilson placed sixth in the 1999 World Championships. At 136.5 pounds, Tonya Evinger (Bates City, Mo./Missouri Valley) first lost by a technical fall to Selvichka of Bulgaria, 10-0, then came back and pinned Sultansuyn of Turkey. Evinger placed second in the 2000 World Team Trials and t he 2000 U.S. Nationals. Tocarra Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) won with two technical falls over her opponents at 149.75 pounds. First by a 14-4 score over Stonka of Bulgaria, then a 10-0 score over Raichera of Bulgaria. Montgomery finished fourth in the 2000 U.S. Nationals. 2000 World Team member Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) pinned Filiz of Turkey, then won by a technical fall over Salihoglu of Turkey, 12-1 at 165.25 pounds.
