MARQUETTE - Six new members of the U.S. Olympic Education Center's women's freestyle wrestling team competed July 6 at the Junior Canada Cup in Guelph, Ontario.
Five wrestlers finished fourth or better. Marquette Senior High School senior Beth Johnson (Garden City, Kan.) finished first at 56-kilograms with three straight wins against Canadian competitors.
"Beth hurt her hand during our team training camp [held at USOEC prior to the competition]. It was good to see that she can overcome an injury and still perform well," said head coach Shannyn Gillespie.
Elizabeth DeAngelo (Mebane, N.C.), an MSHS senior, placed second at 52 kg. She won her first two matches, but fell to Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md.) in her final match.
MSHS seniors Melissa Apodaca (Anchorage, Alaska) and Schuyler Brown (Montpelier, Va.) came in fourth at 60 and 65 kg, respectively. Both wrestlers finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.
At 70 kg, MSHS senior Katie Crouch (Florida) compiled a 1-2 record. Her win came over teammate and MSHS senior Lindsey Brooks (Klein, Texas), who finished with a 1-3 record. Crouch and Brooks placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
"Lindsey is a three-time state champion from Texas, one of the few states to sanction high school wrestling," said Gillespie. "Katie stayed under the radar during high school, but showed a high caliber of competition against Lindsey. We are very impressed with their performance."
