Curby, Betts place fifth at Spanish Grand Prix

MADRID, SPAIN - Two members of the USOEC Greco-Roman team, Jacob Curby (LaGrange, Ill./Gator WC/USOEC) and Chas Betts (St. Michael, Minn./Minnesota Storm/USOEC) placed fifth at the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.

Both had 2-2 records in this competitive European event, with losses in the bronze medal round.

Curby opened with a win over Kettunen of Finland, 3-0, 2-0, then lost in three periods to the eventual champion Valimaki (Finland) 0-3, 4-0, 0-5. After defeating Daneshvar of Sweden, 3-0, 3-0 in his first wrestleback match, Curby was defeated by Darkhan of Kazakhstan by fall in 1:25 in the bronze-medal bout. 

Betts also won his first match, a 3-0, 1-1 win over Rolfsen of Norway, then fell in two periods in a competitive bout with 2004 Olympic champion Alexi Mishine of Russia. After beating Ljungback of Sweden, 1-1, 2-0, 2-1 in his next match, Betts lost in the bronze-medal round to Fischer of Germany, 0-3, 0-3.

Two other USOEC athletes competed in the tournament but were eliminated after losing their first match, Kerry Regner (Darlington, Pa./Angry Fish/USOEC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Andy Bisek (Chaska, Minn./Minnesota Storm/USOEC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. 

A strong international field of 25 countries competed, with Germany, Kazakhstan, and Russia placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The group is coached by Dave Curby.  They will travel next to Tbilisi, Georgia for a tournament on Saturday, July 14th
