OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. - Despite their underdog 5th seed in the tournament, Team Illinois showed up in Oklahoma City ready to win and turn some heads at the United States Marine Corps Junior National Greco-Roman Duals, held at Oklahoma City University.
In the first match of the tournament, Illinois defeated 4th seeded Missouri 35-28. They then continued their momentum to win their pool with wins over Nebraska, Virginia, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
Once in the Championship pool, Illinois turned a few more heads by defeating No. 1 seeded Iowa 36-30, as well as defeating Kansas and New York, and earning their spot in the finals against the #2 seeded Team Minnesota.
Team Illinois proved very quickly they were on a mission to win the title by winning the first four matches of the dual and taking a commanding 16-1 lead over Minnesota.
At 119 pounds, Clayton Rush of Illinois kept with his team's winning pattern with yet another upset over #1 Ranked High School Wrestler, Zach Sanders in a three-period decision 3-0, 0-3, 21.
Minnesota finally won a match at 125 pounds when Cole Von Ohlen defeated Lillashawn Coleman 4-0, 5-1.
The two teams traded wins back and forth over the next eight matches, however after Scott Penny (Team Illinois) defeated Jake Kahnke (Team Minnesota 1) by a 4-0, 4-0 decision, Illinois had the Championship Title locked.
The other All-American matches weren't a sure win for any team with duals being decided by only a few points.
California also upset #1 seeded Iowa with a 34-30 win to claim the 3rd Place All-American finish. The big win for California was at 125 pounds when Boris Novachkov pinned Iowa's Matt McDonough 5-1,0:35.
For the fifth Place Match Team New York defeated Team Texas 33-29.
And in another close battle, Team Florida defeated Team Kansas 35-32 to win the 7th place finish.
