AKRON, Ohio - A record-setting field that included some of the nation's best wrestlers contributed to the successful move to Akron for the annual ASICS University Nationals and FILA Cadet Nationals on April 20-22.
The tournament attracted a record number of 1,196 participants, including record numbers in University freestyle (490), FILA Cadet freestyle (377) and FILA Cadet Greco-Roman (215). There also were 114 participants in the University Greco-Roman division.
The event was moved to Akron, Ohio this year after previously being held at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. The three-day event was held this year in the massive University of Akron Athletics Field House.
"The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, Ohio USA Wrestling, and the University of Akron worked extremely hard to ensure the 2007 ASICS FILA Cadet and University National Championships was a huge success for the athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, and fans," said Travis Shives, USA Wrestling's manager of National Events. "With record-setting entries and a tremendously accommodating local organizing committee, USA Wrestling is confident the Akron/Cleveland area is a great location for these highly-competitive National Championship tournaments. As always, we'll evaluate all aspects of this event and look to improve in 2008."
Wrestlers from the U.S. Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University dominated the Greco-Roman division at University Nationals. The USOEC team claimed the unofficial team title with 128 points. The Titan Wrestling Club was second with 37 points.
USOEC wrestlers won 8 of the 10 weight classes at the University Nationals. Akron native Harry Lester, who wrestles for the USOEC, won University Nationals titles in Greco-Roman and freestyle. He was named Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman.
The unofficial University Nationals team race in freestyle was very tight with the top three finishers separated by just two points. Penn State was first with 36 points, followed by the Chattanooga School of Wrestling with 35 and the Hawkeye Wrestling Club with 34.
Penn State had one champion in Jake Strayer while the Hawkeye Wrestling Club crowned a pair of champions in Ryan Morningstar and Matt Fields.
