Cole Schmitt (New Glarus, Wis./New Glarus HS) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for April 24-30.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.
Schmitt won a FILA Cadet Nationals title in Greco-Roman wrestling on April 20 in Akron, Ohio. Schmitt won the title at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. by earning a 2-3, 2-1, 4-1 finals win over Utah's Jason Chamberlain, who won the FILA Cadet Nationals title in freestyle two days later. Schmitt was named Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman at the FILA Cadet Nationals.
Schmitt's win at Akron came just three weeks after he won the Junior Folkstyle Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Schmitt also won the 2006 Cadet Nationals in Greco-Roman in Fargo, N.D.
Schmitt, a junior at New Glarus High School, is a two-time Wisconsin state high school champion.
