Univ. of North Carolina hosts Mat Jam Wrestling Tournament this weekend

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina will host the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling tournament this Saturday, March 3, starting at 11 a.m. in Carmichael Auditorium. The tournament, known as Mat Jam, will be held concurrently with the Southern Conference and Colonial Athletic Association tournaments. Mat Jam marks the first time a multiple-conference tournament has taken place at one site. Fans will have the opportunity to see action take place on six mats at once, with all three conferences competing at the same time. In all, 30 champions will be crowned, 10 from each conference, and three conference championships will be earned. Competing from the Atlantic Coast Conference are Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State and Virginia. Representing the CAA is American, Campbell, George Mason, James Madison and Old Dominion. The Southern Conference will send Appalachian State, The Citadel, Davidson, Tenn.-Chattanooga, UNC Greensboro and VMI. There will be a number of this season's nationally ranked wrestlers competing. These include 5th-ranked Marc Hoffer (American-149 pounds), 7th-ranked JohnMark Bentley (UNC-149 pounds), 14th-ranked Zach Breitenbach (NCSU-197) and 18th-ranked Jeff Rusak (ODU-174 pounds). There will also be 44 wrestlers that qualified for the 2000 NCAA tournament in action. Ticket prices for Mat Jam are $10 for adults, $5 for college students with an ID and students age 7 to high school, and free for kids 6 and under.
