EDINBORO, Pa. - Edinboro's University's Gregor Gillespie has been named the Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Year. A week ago Gillespie capped his sophomore season by becoming just the third wrestler in Edinboro history to win the national championship at the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships.
In addition to Gillespie, the EWL recognized Bloomsburg's John Stutzman as its Coach of the Year, and Matt Moley of Bloomsburg as the Freshman of the Year.
Gillespie entered Nationals seeded fifth at 149 lbs. After opening with a 9-5 win over Sam Alvarenga of VMI, he won by major decision over 12th-seeded Dan Vallimont of Penn State, 10-2. That put him in the quarterfinals against Cornell's Jordan Leen. The fourth seed, Leen handed Gillespie one of his two losses during the season, a 9-4 overtime decision. This time around Gilespie handled Leen, 6-2.
In the semifinals Gillespie faced defending national champion and number one seed Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota. Gillespie snapped Schlatter's 65-match winning streak with a 3-2 decision to reach the finals.
The finals pitted Gillespie against third-seeded Josh Churella of Michigan, a hometown favorite with the Nationals in Auburn Hills, Mich. The match was tied at 1-1 heading into sudden victory, and Gillespie staved off a takedown attempt by Churella to come up with his own late in the overtime for the 3-1 win.
Gillespie joins Sean O'Day (1989) and Josh Koscheck (2001) as Edinboro's lone Division I national champions. In addition, he is now a two-time All-American after finishing seventh a year ago. He is just the 12th Fighting Scot to earn All-American honors more than once.
He finished the year with a 34-2 record, avenging both of his losses during the year. In addition to the loss to Leen, he was a 10-9 loser to West Virginia's David Jauregui. He would come back to defeat Jauregui, 6-3, in the EWL finals, picking up his second straight EWL championship. Gillespie also finished first at the Michigan State Open and was third at the Southern Scuffle. He will enter his junior year with an impressive 74-6 career record.
This marks the second straight year an Edinboro wrestler was named the EWL's Wrestler of the Year. Shawn Bunch was accorded the honor a year ago.
