EAST STROUDSBURG, PA - After the morning session of the EIWA Wrestling Championships, in which the consolation rounds were completed, the top four team spots have been clinched heading into the championship finals.
Cornell, which has six finalists and two other place winners, had 121.5 points, followed by Navy in second with 101 points, Penn in third with 93.5 points, Lehigh in fourth with 80 points and Columbia in fifth with 74.5 points.
The morning session helped determine what individual athletes will compete at the NCAA Championships in Auburn Hills, Mich. in two weeks. The conference has 47 NCAA qualifiers. The top four in each weight class automatically qualify, and conference coaches select seven wildcards from the rest of the field.
Cornell had only two wrestlers in Saturday morning's action, but finished strong, as they claimed a third place with Josh Arnone at 184 pounds and a fourth place with Joey Hooker at 174 pounds. Arnone defeated top-seed David Craig of Lehigh in the bronze-medal match, 5-1.
Navy, which has four in the finals, got a third-place from John Cox at 149 pounds, and a pair of fifth-place winners in Joseph Baker at 133 pounds and Matthew Parsons at 197 pounds.
Penn, with three in the finals, got a third place from Matt Herrington at 174 pounds, and three fifth-place winners in Brett McCurdy at 141 pounds, Zachary Shanaman at 165 pounds and Lior Zamir at 184 pounds.
The wildest match of the session came at 141 pounds, when Max Meltzer of Harvard won the third-place match over Kyle Borschoff of American, 7-4 in a tiebreaker. The match went 11 minutes before Meltzer was able to emerge as the winner.
