Sombo star Mohlman named finalist for Amateur Athlete of Year in Palm Beach County, Fla.

2006 Sombo World silver medalist Raimie Mohlman of Lake Worth, Fla. has been named as a finalist for Amateur Athlete of the Year by the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame.
Mohlman was one of three athletes nominated for the award this year. Also under consideration for the award are Belle Glade football player Omar Haugabook and Riviera Beach basketball player Erlana Larkins.
Mohlman captured a silver medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. at the Sombo World Championships in Antalya, Turkey in November. FILA hosted its first Sombo World Championships since recognizing the sport as a form of wrestling this year. Sombo is a form of jacket wrestling developed in the former Soviet Union. Mohlman was one of seven U.S. athletes to win a medal at the Sombo World Championships, and the team finished second in the team standings.
Mohlman also won a gold medal at the 2006 Sombo World Cup, the first U.S. winner in that event since 1984. Mohlman won the U.S. Sombo Nationals in Palm Beach County, Fla., to earn a spot on the U.S. World Team. He also competed in the U.S. Beach National Championships.
He is an active Greco-Roman wrestler on the Senior level. Mohlman qualified to compete in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Greco-Roman in Indianapolis, Ind. at the age of 42, gaining national attention. Mohlman is a teacher and wrestling coach in Palm Beach County.
Haugabook is a quarterback for Troy, and led the team to a Sun Belt Conference title and a victory over Rice in the New Orleans Bowl.
Larkins is a starter for the Univ. of North Carolina's women's basketball team, averaging over 13 points a game and earning all-ACC honors. She was caption of the U.S. Under-20 basketball team, which won a gold medal in Mexico City.
Mohlman will be honored at the 31st Annual Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet and Annual Sports Awards on Sunday, April 29, 2007 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2007 will be inducted, featuring, Delores Colton, Kevin Cooney, Curt Gowdy, Larry O'Brien, Rob Rabenecker, Jr., Barbara Romack and Bob Vanatta. Other awards will be the Professional Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, High School Coach of the Year, High School Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Sports Contributor.
