ANTALYA, Turkey - There was no shortage of confusion when FILA officials tried to determine the winner of the three-team World Cup Greco-Roman wrestling pool involving the United States, Russia and Iran.

But in the end, FILA officials made the right call.

And that call put the United States into the finals and gives the Americans a chance to win their first World Cup dual-meet title in Greco-Roman wrestling. The seven-member U.S. squad will meet Ukraine in the finals on Sunday.

The confusion started when the U.S. beat Russia, Iran beat the U.S. and Russia beat Iran in pool matches on Saturday. FILA originally declared Iran the winner of the tiebreaker since it had scored the most classification points of the three teams in the pool.

But U.S. coach Jay Antonelli pointed out to FILA officials that the first criteria for the tiebreaker is total matches won. So 30 minutes after it was announced Iran was going to the finals, a second announcement came that the U.S. now was headed to the finals by virtue of most matches won.

The U.S. won 5 of 7 matches to beat Russia for what is believed to be the first time ever in a Greco-Roman World Cup. The Americans went 3-4 in the dual that followed against Iran. Russia beat Iran 5-2. That gave the U.S. eight wins, Russia seven and Iran six.

"We're very excited to have an opportunity to win this event," USA Wrestling National Greco-Roman coach Steve Fraser said. "It's been a pretty fierce competition so far. We came out and wrestled like gangbusters against a really tough Russian team in our first dual. It was a big victory for us.

"We were a little flat against Iran and didn't wrestle as well as we obviously should have. All the matches were real tough, and we lost a couple coin tosses. Jake Clark came up with a big win for us in that dual - we needed that one."

Clark, a 2006 U.S. World Team member, won both his matches at 84 kg/185 lbs. World champions Joe Warren (60 kg/132 lbs.) and Dremiel Byers (120 kg/264.5 lbs.) also went 2-0 on Saturday.

"Jake Clark stuck the Russian with a front headlock and came back tough against Iran. I was very proud of Jake - he did a great job," Fraser said. "Joe Warren's wrestling like a warrior and has been a great leader for us. He's just relentless out there. And Byers is looking real tough for us."

World bronze medalist Lindsey Durlacher set the tone for the U.S. by hitting a five-point throw en route to a win against Russia's Sergey Petrov at 55 kg/121 lbs. Warren, World bronze medalist Harry Lester (66 kg/145.5 lbs.), Clark and Byers followed with victories. Durlacher and Warren wrestle for the New York Athletic Club, Lester is with the Gator Wrestling Club, Clark with the U.S. Marines and Byers with the U.S. Army.

The American team will face a difficult challenge in Sunday's finals. Ukraine knocked off 2006 World Championships team champion and host Turkey by a 4-3 score on Saturday.

"We need to wrestle better than we did against Iran because Ukraine is wrestling really well," Fraser said. "We need to step up and wrestle better."

Russia will wrestle for third place today with Iran going for fifth.
