Charleston, S.C. - The Southern Conference announced on Thursday that senior Travis Piccard has been named the Wrestler of the Week. Piccard went 3-0 for the week, including 1-0 in the SoCon, and finished the regular season with a mark of 21-4, 4-1 in the SoCon. He has won his last three SoCon bouts and his last six bouts overall. The native of Allendale, Mich. earned two victories in a tri-meet against VMI and North Carolina on Sunday at McAlister Field House. Wrestling at 157 pounds, Piccard recorded a 19-2 technical fall against VMI's Vince Cole and then registered a 9-3 decision over Keenan Duffie of North Carolina. In the last dual bout of this career, Piccard earned a 10-2 major decision over Brendan Couture of Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. Piccard is a three-time SoCon finalist as he placed second at 157 pounds in 2003, third at 149 pounds in 2004, and first at 157 in 2005. He also advanced to the round of 12 at the 2005 NCAA Championships. Piccard has a career record of 116-31. The Bulldogs are coming off a 22-17 victory over Gardner-Webb in their last dual meet of the season on Wednesday at McAlister Field House. In addition to Piccard's win, junior Levi Duyn notched a fall for the Bulldogs in 2:11 at 149 pounds over Ben Hoppenbrouwer and junior John Buck clinched the victory with a 6-2 decision against Nick Roehrick at 285 pounds. Others to win for the Cadets were freshman Tyler Sim by a 5-4 decision over Cortney Roberts at 125 pounds, freshman Zachary Filter by an 8-2 decision against Matthias Piasecki at 165 pounds, and junior Darius Caldwell by a 4-1 decision over Chad Davis at 174 pounds. Northern Iowa's Moza Fay honored by Western Wrestling Conference CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - University of Northern Iowa 157-pounder Moza Fay has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week as announced by league officials. It is the second time Fay has been honored as the WWC Wrestler of the Week this season. UNI's Fay (Anamosa, Iowa) recorded two falls in a pair of Western Wrestling Conference duals. Fay pinned North Dakota State's Adam Aho in 3:46 on Friday, and followed it up with a pin of South Dakota State's Nick Herrboldt in 4:35 on Saturday. With his two wins, Fay improved his season-long win streak to eight in a row and 14 of his last 15. Fay also leads the Panthers this season with nine pins. Fay finished the regular season with a mark of 29-9 overall and 12-4 in dual action. (Taos HS) Minnesota's Jayson Ness honored by Big Ten Jayson Ness, Minnesota Fr., 125, Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy Ness continued his recent stretch of domination with two impressive wins last weekend to help Minnesota wrap up a perfect 8-0 season in the Big Ten and extend its winning streak to 20 dual meets overall, the third longest streak in school history. The Minnesota freshman pinned Wisconsin's Drew Hammen in 3:47 on Friday and then shut out No. 5 Charlie Falck of Iowa in an 8-0 major decision on Sunday. With the win, the fourth-ranked wrestler extended his own winning streak to 16 consecutive matches. During this streak, Ness has defeated 10 ranked opponents, including six ranked in the top 10. He has earned bonus points in 11 of those 16 matches and has accounted for five pins, two technical falls and four major decisions. This is the second career weekly honor for Ness as he was honored on Dec. 12, 2006. Augustana's Buys honored by North Central Conference Augustana's Nate Buys has been named the North Central Conference Co-Wrestler of the Week for the week ending February 18, the league office announced today. He shared the award with J.D. Naig of Nebraska-Omaha. It is the second time this season Buys has received the award. Buys, a senior from Hull, Iowa, and ranked third in the nation at 197 pounds, had an impressive win last week. He avenged 1 of his 2 losses on the year by scoring a 13-2 major decision over No. 2 ranked Jacob Marrs of Nebraska-Omaha. In the win, Buys had 5:45 of riding time and did not allow a point until surrendering a reversal with 8 seconds left in the match. Buys will lead the Vikings, ranked 14th in the nation, into this week's North Regional Championships, scheduled for Sunday in Moorhead, Minn. The top 4 placers in each weight class advance to the national championships. Ohio's Albert Madsen honored by MAC ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio sophomore wrestler Albert Madsen has been named the Mid-American Conference wrestler of the week after his 141-pound win against No. 5 Central Michigan last week, the conference office announced Wednesday. Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio) finished off the 2006-07 regular season last Thursday with a 10-6 win over the Chippewas' Eric Kruger. Kruger entered the competition ranked 17th in the nation according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings and was the top-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds in the MAC. Madsen came into the match second in the conference rankings. Thursday's match started with a quick takedown by Madsen for a 2-0 lead. Kruger escaped, but not before Madsen earned a riding time advantage. Kruger started the second period with an escape to tie the score at two but Madsen answered with another takedown. After another Kruger escape, Madsen took him down again for a 6-3 lead after two periods. Kruger started the third with a takedown but Madsen countered with an escape and a takedown of his own for a 10-6 win over the 17th-ranked wrestler in the country. The win moved Madsen to 10-7 on the season and will likely give him the top seed at 141 pounds in the upcoming MAC Championship. He is a perfect 5-0 in MAC dual meets this season. The event will be held March 3-4 in Buffalo, N.Y. The Bobcats have recorded a 16-8 overall record this season, the most dual meet wins in a single season in the 10-year coaching career of Ohio Head Coach Joel Greenlee. The Bobcats finished 2-3 in MAC dual meets this season. Madsen is the second Ohio wrestler to earn the MAC honor this season, joining fellow sophomore Terry Jackson (Uhrichsville, Ohio). Nebraska's Paul Donahoe honored by Big 12 IRVING, Texas - Paul Donahoe (Nebraska) has been named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for his performances of Feb. 12-18, the conference announced. Donahoe receives this recognition for the first time in his career. Paul Donahoe, Nebraska, So., 125 pounds, Davison, Mich/Davison Donahoe went 3-0 on the weekend including an 8-2 win over No. 20 Matt Eveleth (Penn) at 125 pounds. He has won six of his last seven matches including two against ranked opponents. The Davison, Mich., native started out the season by winning 23 of his first 24 matches. He is 29-4 on the season and 15-3 in duals. Maryland's Hudson Taylor honored by ACC GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland's Hudson Taylor is the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week for February 19 after pinning two opponents last week. The freshman is currently ranked 15th in the nation at 197 pounds (as of February 13 rankings). On Friday, Taylor closed the ACC regular season 5-0 with a pin of Virginia's Kyle Narkiewicz at the 2:59 mark. It was his third pin of a league opponent this year. On Saturday, the Pennington, N.J. native added another fall, this time pinning George Mason's Harry Zander at the 3:46 mark. The two pins this week, marked his 11th and 12th of the season. Taylor finished the regular season 18-3 in dual competition and 24-7 overall.
