Marcus LeVesseur (Minneapolis, Minn./Augsburg College) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 23-29.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.
LeVesseur, a senior, improved his career collegiate record to 141-0 by twice beating the top-ranked NCAA Division II wrestler in the same week at 165 pounds.
LeVesseur downed No. 1 Nate Naker of Minnesota State Moorhead 3-2 in a dual meet on Jan. 23. Baker is the reigning Division II national champion at 165.
LeVesseur followed by beating No. 1 Ross Taplin of Nebraska-Omaha 4-1 on Jan. 26. Taplin moved into the No. 1 spot at 165 the day after Baker lost to LeVesseur.
LeVesseur, who won three NCAA Division III titles at 157 pounds from 2003-05, improved to 17-0 this year at 165. Augsburg is ranked No. 1 in Division III and won the National Duals earlier this season.
LeVesseur's 141-match winning streak is the second longest in college wrestling history, behind the 159 of Iowa State's Cael Sanderson from 1998-2002.
