USA Wrestling has updated its new "Bout of the Week" which has been posted as a video file on-line on TheMat.com Audio/Video website .
The featured match this week is the 2006 Ibragim Aldatov vs. Asghar Ali Bazrighaleh gold medal finals at 74 kg/163 lbs. in men's freestyle at the World Wrestling Championships in Guangzhou, China.
Very rarely is the gold-medal match at the World Championships a battle between two relative unknown athletes who are both competing in their first World meet. However, at the 2006 World Freestyle Championships, this was the case when World newcomers Ibragim Aldatov of Ukraine squared off against Asghar Ali Bazrighaleh of Iran met at 74 kg.
Perhaps these athletes were well known in their nation and their region, but neither had represented their nation at the World Championships before. Aldatov, then 22, was in his first major competition. Bazrighaleh had only one previous major international event, winning a bronze medal at the 2006 Freestyle World Cup.
Both had been wrestling in international tournaments in previous years, and were among the placewinners at some of them.
Aldatov was 10th at the 2005 Yarygin International in Russia, and won a bronze medal at the 2006 Kiev International in Ukraine.
Bazrighaleh won a gold medal at 66 kg at the 2004 Takhti Cup in his native Iran, and was seventh at the 2005 Yarygin International in Russia. He was also active in the Iranian Professional League in recent seasons.
At the World Championships, both wrestlers had to beat some talented and experienced athletes to reach the finals.
Aldatov's road to the gold-medal match featured victories over Lee Armstrong of Australia, Soslan Tigiev of Uzbekistan, Krystian Brzozowski of Poland and Mihail Ganev of Bulgaria. It was Ganev who upset two-time Olympic champion Bouvaisa Saitiev of Russia in the quarterfinals.
Bazrighaleh worked his way to the finals with wins over Abdulhakim Shapiyev of Kazakhstan, Stefan Gheorghita of Romania, Donny Pritzlaff of the United States and Murad Gaidarov of Belarus.
The gold-medal finals match was very active and interesting, with Aldatov emerging as the winner. Wrestling fans will remember the intensity and skill of the young, unheralded new World champion in his first international appearance.
Since then, both wrestlers have continued to win. Bazrighaleh captured a gold medal at the 2006 Asian Games. Aldatov won his match at The World vs. Russia dual meet in Dagestan, a prize money competition, defeating Russia's Denis Tsargush. We can expect more outstanding performances from these young stars.
This popular feature will be changed on a regular basis, allowing members to enjoy many of the greatest matches in wrestling history.
