Senior Ryan Hurley has been named Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week after winning all three of his bouts on Sunday (Jan. 21) to help Cleveland State to a perfect 3-0 record at the Ashland Duals. Hurley, an Akron native, is the second Viking to capture the award. The EWL office made the announcement on Monday (Jan. 22).
Hurley, who is now 20-8 at 149 pounds, opened the day with a 3-0 win over Bridger Lord in CSU's 23-10 win over Air Force. Hurley led his next opponent, Mick Nicola of Ashland, 17-0 before winning by medical default. Cleveland State defeated Ashland, 35-10. Hurley would finish the sweep with a 10-5 win over Ohio's Clay Tucker in Cleveland State's 24-12 win over the Bobcats.
"Ryan is a very talented wrestler and this honor is good for him and for our program," head coach Jack Effner said. "We hope the rest of our team can feed off things like this and keep getting better."
Sophomore Victer Crenshaw was named the league's wrestler of the week on Jan. 8.
Cleveland State (7-2), which has won four straight and six of its last seven, travels to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.
