GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland's Jason Kiessling was tabbed Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after posting three dual match victories last week including a win in conference play and two victories over ranked opponents.
Kiessling opened conference play with an upset victory over 12th-ranked Keegan Mueller of North Carolina at 165 pounds. The senior wrestler recorded a late takedown in the second period to beat Mueller by a 2-1 decision. Maryland would go on to defeat North Carolina 26-12 in the team competition to start league play at 1-0 in 2007.
In non-conference action, Kiessling started the week with a 6-4 overtime victory over Navy's Justin Jacobs recording a takedown 37 seconds into the extra session to earn the win. On Saturday against No. 14 Roger Smith-Bergsrud of Illinois, the La Plata, Md., native held off a late rally to earn a 7-4 decision. Kiessling led 5-1 heading into the third period, but an escape and a riding time bonus point solidified the victory for the Terrapin senior.
Kiessling improved his overall record to 20-5, 14-2 in dual match play this season. He is currently riding a 12-match win streak in dual meet action. Kiessling and the Terrapins are back in action this weekend as they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to face-off against Virginia Tech on Saturday, January 20 at 2:00 pm.
