"A NEW KIND OF FIGHT"
Millions of American TV viewers are watching a new form of fighting called "Mixed Martial Arts" or "MMA." Not long ago, the sport was banned as too vicious for decent society. But Mixed Martial Arts came back swinging, and this fall, a MMA fight broadcast drew more young men viewers than the major league baseball playoff game that same night. 60 MINUTES will look at MAA - now one of the fastest growing sports in America - this Sunday, Dec. 10 (7PM ET/PT on CBS).
Many in the Mixed Martial Arts world are promoting this airing to its fans.
The following information has been provided by the International Fight League:
"60 MINUTES'" TO FEATURE IFL COACHES RENZO GRACIE AND PAT MILETICH AS PART OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS SEGMENT ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10
Reporter Scott Pelley trained with and interviewed both legends as part of in-depth look at the growth of MMA
NEW YORK, December 8, 2006- Two of the International Fight League's (OTC.BB: IFLI) legendary coaches, world Jiu-Jitsu champion and coach of the IFL's New York-based Pitbulls team Renzo Gracie, and Pat Miletich, coach of the IFL's Moline, Illinois-based Silverbacks team, will be featured as part of Scott Pelley's report on the growth of Mixed Martial Arts on "60 Minutes" on Sunday, December 10, at 7 p.m. EST/PST on CBS.
"This is yet another example of how the sport of Mixed Martial Arts continues to gain traction in the mainstream," said IFL Co-founder and Commissioner Kurt Otto. "It is great that champions like Pat and Renzo, along with our other coaches and all the great athletes that they train, such as UFC Champion Matt Hughes (who is also feature in the segment) and others, are steadily getting more and more recognition for all their years of hard work and dedication."
Pelley trained with both Gracie and Miletich, and the "60 Minutes" cameras were on site when their teams met at The MARK in Moline, Illinois, on September 23, the same night Gracie took on Miletich in the main event Superfight. The piece will also look at UFC champion Hughes, his career and his relationship with Miletich.
