GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech's Stave Ratley and Maryland's Jason Kiessling were named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Wrestlers of the Week after leading their respective squads over the last two weeks. Ratley posted an 8-1 dual meet record, while Kiessling defeated a ranked opponent.
Ratley defeated Nebraska's Casey Roberts back on November 24 by fall in 1:22. Ratley was one of only two Hokie wrestlers to win their bout against the Cornhuskers as Virginia Tech dropped the match 34-9.
The redshirt junior went 7-1 last week at the Nittany Lion Open to place fifth at 174 pounds. Of Ratley's seven wins, six were by fall with an average pin time of 2:04. Ratley began the Open with a pin (3:55) of Michigan State's Blake Mesyn followed by his only loss of the tournament to Navy's Mark Stolpinsky, ranked No. 20 nationally, by an 11-4 decision. The Arlington, Va., native bounced right back in his next match earning a technical foul shutout downing Jeff Blowers of Buffalo 15-0. Ratley closed out the tournament with five straight pins including a fall in the fifth place match.
Ratley has posted a 15-4 record on the season including a team-high 12 pins. He is just three pins away from tying the single-season school record for pins of 15 held by Sean Gray (2001-02) and David Hoffman (2004-05).
Two weeks ago in Maryland's match against Nebraska, Kiessling put together an impressive 11-6 decision win over No. 12 Marc Harwood. Both wrestlers were deadlocked at three at the end of the first period and then again at five in the second period before Kiessling went on a 6-1 run to win the match 11-6.
The senior from La Plata, Md., then guided the Terps to victory over VMI, 30-9. Kiessling was dominating in his dual match defeating John Burton by technical fall, 23-7.
