USA Wrestling has announced format changes for the procedures at the 2007 U.S. World Team Trials and the 2007 U.S. National Championships events.
In men's freestyle, the achievements necessary for a 2007 U.S. Nationals champion to advance directly to the best-of-three finals series at the 2007 World Team Trials has been expanded.
All 2007 U.S. Nationals champions in freestyle who also have achieved one of the following criteria will receive a bye out of the World Team Trials Tournament and directly into the best-of-three Championship Series finals:
- Junior World Medalist within the current Olympic quadrennium
- University World Medalist within the current Olympic quadrennium
- Top 10 from the World Championship within the current Olympic quadrennium
- Multiple Senior-level World Team Member
This is a change from the 2006 season, when only current year World medalists that also won the U.S. Nationals Championship earned a bye out of the World Team Trials Tournament.
In 2006, only one men's freestyle wrestler earned the right to advance directly to the best-of-three Championship series at the World Team Trials, Tolly Thompson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
There were no changes made in the procedures from last year for national champions to advance to the best-of-three Championship Series in either men's Greco-Roman or women's freestyle. The only change was made for men's freestyle.
At the U.S. Nationals, there has also been a change in the weigh-in procedures in both men's freestyle and men's Greco-Roman.
The change has to do with the weigh-in rules for the eight wrestlers in each weight class that earn the right to advance from the Qualification Tournament into the U.S. National Championships on the final day.
The athletes who qualify for the U.S. Nationals through the Qualification Tournament will have the option to weigh-in on Friday at scratch weight at 3:00 p.m. or at 6:00 p.m. with a two kg weight allowance. Athletes in the Qualification Tournament will have three hours to make weight upon the completion of the weight category they are competing in if that tournament continues within three hours of the 6:00 p.m. weigh in.
This is providing one additional hour to weigh in, as well as one additional kg at the weigh in. Last year, the athletes had only two hours to make weight after the conclusion of their weight class, and the weight allowance was one kg. This change was initiated by the Athlete Advisory Committee of USA Wrestling.
There are no changes for weigh-ins for women's freestyle at the U.S. Nationals, which remains a one-day tournament.
