Joe Heskett (Columbus, Ohio/Gator WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Nov. 21-27.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.
Heskett won a gold medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. in men's freestyle wrestling at the Henri Deglane Challenge in Nice, France, Nov. 24-25. He was one of four U.S. individual champions at the event, which featured competition in all three international wrestling styles.
Heskett won all three of his matches, including a victory over 2000 Olympic silver medalist Arsen Gitinov of Russia in the gold-medal finals. He also stopped Carsevan Vardanyan of Armenia in the semifinals and Carlos Dominguez Fernandez of CAT Club in the quarterfinals.
This was the first time that Heskett has won the Henri Deglane Challenge title, after winning medals at this event in three previous attempts.
Heskett is currently ranked No. 2 at his weight class in the United States by TheMat.com. He was a NCAA champion and four-time All-American for Iowa State Univ. Heskett accepted an assistant coach position at The Ohio State University this year.
