The National Wrestling Coaches Association has released its first regular season coaches poll and individual ranking of the 2006-07 season. After Hofstra's stunning upset of preseason #1 Minnesota, there's a new team atop the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll. Oklahoma State (2-0) garnered eight of the 12 first-place votes in the coaches poll to grab the top spot.
Missouri moved up to #2, followed by Minnesota, Iowa State and Hofstra. Four teams shared first-place votes, with Missouri, Iowa State and Hofstra each getting a nod. Iowa moved to #6. Big Ten programs occupied three of the last four spots in the top ten with Penn State coming in seventh, Michigan eighth and Northwestern in at #10.
Individually, Nick Simmons of Michigan State and Trent Paulson of Iowa State are the only two changes among top-ranked wrestlers individually. Simmons, who was ranked in the preseason at 125 pounds, has wins over returning NCAA champion Matt Valenti of Penn and two-time All-American Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State. Simmons is now #1 at 133.
Paulson takes over the top spot after a pair of victories over previous #1 Brian Stith of Arizona State. Paulson beat Stith 2-1 in the annual NWCA All-Star Classic, but the bout didn't count for NCAA record keeping purposes, thus could not be considered. However, the wait would be short as Paulson beat Stith a week later in Iowa State's 40-0 victory over the Sundevils in Ames.
Northern Iowa is the only new team in the Top 25 this week. The Panthers battled sixth-ranked Iowa to the brink before falling 18-15.
