Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling All-American  James Yonushonis (Philipsburg, Pa.) won his match at the prestigious NWCA All-Star Classic in Dallas, Tex., while two-time All-American Phil Davis (Harrisburg, Pa.) was forced to forfeit for weight reasons.

Yonushonis, a returning All-American and ranked No. 3 at 174, met No. 2 Matt Herrington of Penn in the sixth of ten bouts in the classic.  Trying to avenge a loss to Herrington in the NCAA tournament last season, the Nittany Lion senior did just that with a 5-4 victory over his in-state rival.

Herrington got the first two points a minute in with a takedown of Yonushonis. That takedown turned out to be the only scoring of the first period, giving Herrington a 2-0 lead with a 2:06 riding time edge heading into the middle stanza. Herrington chose down to start the second and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. Yonushonis got his first takedown with :20 left in the second to cut the lead to 3-2 going into the third.  Yonushonis, down one and facing a riding time deficit, chose down to begin the third and tied the score with an escape. The Nittany Lion senior continued to be the aggressor, nearly getting another takedown early in the third, only to have Herrington fight the attempt off.  Facing a riding time deficit with :36 left, Yonushonis countered a Herrington shot and scored his own takedown to go up 5-3.  Needing to hold Herrington down to secure the win due to the Penn wrestler's riding time edge, Yonushonis was strong on top and maintained his advantage to take away an exciting 5-4 win.

Davis, a two-time All-American and national runner-up last season, was to meet Jerry Rinaldi of Cornell at 197.  Davis, the defending Big Ten Champion, is ranked No. 1 while Rinaldi is ranked No. 2.  Davis, who downed Rinaldi twice last year including a win in the national semifinals, could not make weight after the Pa. Duals and the flight to Dallas last night.

As exhibitions, the results from the NWCA bouts do not count on either wrestler's overall record.  Davis is 2-0 after winning twice at the Pennsylvania Duals on Sunday while Yonushonis is 3-0 after going undefeated as well.  Head coach Troy Sunderland's crew was 3-0 on the day, defeating Clarion (47-0), Pitt-Johnstown (29-6) and No. 13 Edinboro (27-9).

Penn State, ranked No. 8 in the nation, will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 3, when its hosts the Nittany Lion Open in Rec Hall beginning at 8:30 a.m.  Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Rec Hall door the day of the event and season ticket holders get in for free.  Penn State's next dual will be a home battle with No. 21 Lehigh on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. in Rec Hall.  Season tickets are on sale now.
