DALLAS - Three Oklahoma Sooner wrestlers, Sam Hazewinkel, Matt Storniolo and Will Rowe competed in the 41st annual National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic, Monday night at the Dallas Convention Center.

"I'm proud of the way all three of our wrestlers competed tonight," head coach Jack Spates said.

Hazewinkel, competing in his third straight All-Star Classic defeated Travis Gardner of Stanford by a decision of 4-1 in the 125-pound match.

"You can never be upset with a win but at the same time I did not come out and wrestle the way I wanted to," Hazewinkel said.

Hazewinkel never trailed in the match, as he recorded a takedown at the end of the first period and recorded a reversal at the end of the second period.  Gardner could only manage an escape in the third period for his lone point.

Hazewinkel has now won three consecutive NWCA All-Star Classic 125-pound matches.

"This match did exactly what I wanted because it helped me figure out where I am at this point in the season and of course you can never be upset with a win.

"It feels really good to be competing in this event because coming out of high school my plan was to be invited to these events, so it is very pleasing to win three consecutive years in a row," Hazewinkel continued.

Storniolo was never able to get anything working in his 149-pound match as Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota defeated the Oklahoma All-American by a decision of 3-0.

Schlatter scored an early takedown and that was all 2006 149-pound NCAA Champion needed as he held Storniolo scoreless. Schlatter scored a late escape to cap the scoring.

Rowe defeated Travis Piccard by a decision of 10-4 in the 157-pound exhibition match.

Piccard scored an early takedown in the first period to take a 2-0 lead than Rowe followed that up by scoring an escape and a takedown of his own to take a 3-2 lead. Piccard managed an escape to tie it at 3-3 at the end of the first period.

At the beginning of the second period Rowe scored a takedown and never looked back. The Sooner sophomore scored two more takedowns and added a point due to riding time to win 10-4.

"Will Rowe was outstanding tonight as was Sam Hazewinkel. That was the first time Matt Storniolo has wrestled this year so I was pleased to see him wrestle as well as he did," continued Spates.

The Sooners return home next week to host the 36th annual Oklahoma Open on Thanksgiving weekend.
