Nick Simmons (Williamston, Mich./Michigan WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Nov. 7-13.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.
Simmons, a senior at Michigan State and a three-time All-American at 125 pounds, knocked off defending 133-pound NCAA champion Matt Valenti of Penn on Sunday, Nov. 12 in the finals of the Michigan State Open. Simmons scored a reversal against Valenti with 30 seconds remaining to win the match 2-0. Simmons is 9-0 this season at 133.
Simmons has placed seventh, fourth and fourth in the NCAA Championships at 125 for the Spartans.
He is a top prospect internationally and competed at the World University Championships in freestyle this past summer in Mongolia, finishing 1-1 at 60 kg/132 pounds. Simmons placed third at the 2005 U.S. World Team Trials at 55 kg/121 pounds.
