Lawrenceville, N.J. -The Lawrenceville School is pleased to welcome Michael L. New as its boys' varsity wrestling coach. New comes to Lawrenceville from Princeton University, where he served as the Tigers' head wrestling coach for 11 years. 

"We're delighted to have Michael as a part of our Lawrenceville coaching team," said Michael Goldenberg, the School's acting athletic director. "His impressive record of success as both a collegiate coach and athlete will bring tremendous insight to our wrestling program. Our athletes will certainly benefit from working with such a top-notch coach."

After a short stint as an assistant wrestling coach at his alma mater, Cornell, New joined the Princeton wrestling staff in 1996, again as an assistant coach. He was promoted to head coach for the 1998-99 season, and began the daunting challenge of rebuilding the Tiger program, which had been discontinued from 1993-96. His original roster of eight walk-ons has developed into a full squad of nearly 50 competitors from across the nation. New also implemented a women's wrestling program at Princeton, which has produced top finishers in both U.S. and Canadian competitions. 

A past president of Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, New has counseled a number of colleges, including Yale, Bucknell, and Syracuse, advising them on how to re-instate their own wrestling programs. 

A coach who expects excellence in the classroom as well as the weight room, New led his Princeton squads to four National Coaches Wrestling Association Academic Team Titles. The Tigers were the first team in their league to establish a live webcast for a home match, and New's parents' program helped create a highly successful foundation to support numerous future opportunities for the wrestlers.

New's coaching experience isn't restricted to college athletics. He has also worked extensively with high school coaches and wrestlers at a host of clinics and summer camps. Locally, he re-established and promoted the Princeton Amateur Wrestling Society, a Police Athletic League wrestling program for grammar school athletes. 

New boasts an impressive wrestling career of his own. The 1992 Cornell graduate (with a degree in Managerial Economics and Agricultural Science) was as a three-time All-Ivy League Athlete in his weight class, a Collegiate State Champion and Outstanding Wrestler, and a Cornell University "Athlete of the Year."
