96 kg/211.5 lbs. - Daniel Cormier, Stillwater, Okla. (Gator WC)
Will face Ali Reza Heidari of Iran in the first match
"I'm just ready to go out and give my best effort to win. I have the potential to do that this year. I need to eliminate mistakes and hopefully that equals a gold medal. The training has been better this year. It was the best training we've had in years. You can tell by the results so far."
"Nothing equals the World Championships. I get excited every time. Nothing approaches the Worlds. I have had so many chances. Not many have had as many chances as I have. I fumbled them all. I need to get it done this year."
120 kg/264.5 lbs. - Tolly Thompson, Cedar Falls, Iowa (Sunkist Kids)
Will face the winner of the match between Eldar Kurtanidze of Georgia and I. Papodopoulos of Greece in his first bout
"It has been a long time coming. It's time to scrap. It's been a whole year since I won the medal. You want to build on what you did before but you can't count on it. Up until now, training has been really good. This is the best I have trained. It was a good training camp. I feel good here. We've been here like 12 days. It feels like we got here yesterday. My legs came back. I feel great."
48 kg/105.5 lbs. - Mary Kelly, Colorado Springs, Colo. (New York AC)
Will face Le Thi Trang of Vietnam in her first match
"I think training went well. I'm not thinking about that now. I am looking at what is before me, not behind me. I will concentrate on re-hydrating, and getting ready to wrestle tomorrow. I have seen these girls at tournaments before. I don't want to get over-excited. I want to take it like another tournament. I want to come home with a medal. That is my goal. I don't want to go home empty handed."
National Freestyle Coach Kevin Jackson
"We have two experienced guys. These two guys we have high expectations for. Daniel Cormier has been fourth in the Olympics and fifth in the World. He is due for a medal. Tolly Thompson is a returning bronze medalist, and he has gotten better since then. We expect a lot from these wrestlers. We expect them to medal. If they perform and if they wrestle to their potential, we will do fine. If they don't, we will have some problems."
National Women's Coach Terry Steiner
"Mary Kelly is new to the Senior level, and to this scene. She has had great age-group success. She is also a great competitor when the lights come on. She has proven that, including at the Trials this year. I am looking for big things from her. She is calm and collected. She doesn't get rattled easily. She will perform in the big matches. She has stepped it up, and I expect the same here. In training, we focused on a few key areas. She feels confident going in."
