Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Sept. 19-25.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.
Warren became just the fifth American to win a World Championship in Greco-Roman wrestling on Sept. 25 in Guangzhou, China. Warren went 5-0 at 60 kg/132 pounds, beating a World gold, silver and bronze medalist en route to the title. Warren was ninth at the 2005 World Championships.
Warren scored the winning takedown late in the third period of his finals match to outlast Georgia's David Bedinadze in the gold-medal match.
Warren led a banner first day for the U.S. team in China that also included bronze-medal finishes by Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 pounds and Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio/USOEC/Gator WC) at 66 kg/145.5 pounds.
