USA Wrestling has held its first U.S. Beach National Championships, with action in Riviera Beach, Fla. on August 19. It was a successful first national tournament in the new style of wrestling, as the first U.S. World Teams for Beach Wrestling were determined. Qualifying for the U.S. Team at the Men's Below 85 kg (187.5 lbs.) were Steve Forrest of Virginia, Dewitt Driscoll of North Carolina and Jonathan Taylor of Florida. Qualifying for the U.S. Team at the Men's Above 85 kg (187.5 lbs.) were Carlos Dolmo of New York, Frank Workman of Virginia and Angelo Borzio of Pennsylvania. Qualifying for the U.S. Team at the Women's Under 70 kg/154 lbs. division were World Team Trials champion Leigh Jaynes of Colorado, runner-up Lila Ristrevska of Florida and third-place Ingrid Santos of Florida. Individual national champions were also determined on the Veterans, Senior, Elite, Cadet and Schoolboy levels. The first Southern Sand National Beach Wrestling Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on Friday, August 25 and Saturday, August 26. The tournament will be held on the Beach Volleyball Courts in Tulsa. There are numerous age groups, starting with Kids wrestling divisions and going all the way up to Senior and Veterans divisions. There will also be live music at the competition, and a variety of family activities. The Beach season continues past Labor Day, with the announcement last week of the Neptune Festival Beach Brawl Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, Va., Sept. 30-Oct. 1. This event will have two competitions, an individual tournament Saturday, September 30 and a team dual meet tournament, the "Beach Brawl Duals" on Sunday, October 1. In the dual meet portion, entire teams can be entered, or individuals can be placed on a team through a draft system. The wrestling tournament is part of the larger Neptune Festival in Virginia Beach, a major family activity held each year on the Virginia shore. This event is organized by the Virginia Challenge, the same wrestling leaders who presented the North American Beach Championships in Virginia Beach in June.
