Shirzad Ahmadi (Coventry, Conn.) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of Aug. 1-7.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.
Ahmadi captured a silver medal at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in Div. E at the Veterans World Championships on Aug. 4-6 in Riga, Latvia. Veterans are athletes 35 years old and above. There are five age divisions in Veterans wrestling.
Ahmadi won three of his four bouts in his weight class, which was contested as a five-athlete round-robin.
He opened with a victory of Massaki Hatta of Japan, who is a resident of Michigan. In the next round, he dropped a bout to eventual champion Khosorov Zamani of Iran. He finished with two more wins, stopping Vanik Margarian of Russia and Richard Goretzki of Germany.
