FARGO, N.D. - Tyrell Fortune of Oregon was among the top star wrestlers who were unbeaten after the first day of action at the Accelerade Cadet Freestyle Nationals Championships in the Fargodome on Wednesday.

Fortune is attempting to be a four-time Cadet National champion. He was a double champion last year, winning both freestyle and Greco-Roman and was a winner in the Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals which ended on Monday.

Fortune was dominant in his five matches, scoring two pins and two technical falls. The wrestlers he pinned included Tyler Strouhal of Kansas and Cody Jasper of Wisconsin.

David Taylor of Ohio, who won a Cadet Nationals title last year at 91, is competing for his third career Cadet National title. Taylor was a Cadet National Greco-Roman champion on Monday night.

Taylor had a bye in the first round, then pinned his next four opponents. Three of the falls came in the first period, with the other fall in the second period.

The two wrestlers who still have a chance to win the Cadet Triple Crown remained unbeaten, Nate Moore of Iowa at 119 pounds and Travis Rutt of Minnesota at 152 pounds.

Moore won six matches during the day, including a fall and three technical falls. He scored a very prominent fourth-round victory over Collin Palmer of Ohio, a star from St. Edwards High School, 1-0, 2-0. Palmer, an Ohio state champion, won the respected Beast of the East high school tournament this year.

Rutt won all four of his matches, including three technical falls. Rutt was also third at the Cadet Nationals in freestyle last year at 130 pounds.

The Cadet Triple Crown is given to any wrestler who wins the USA Wrestling Cadet National titles in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle during the same year. The USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals were held in Iowa in April. Moore and Rutt added a Greco-Roman national title on Monday to their folkstyle national title earned in April

Only two wrestlers have ever won the Cadet Triple Crown, which was created in 2003. There was no Triple Crown winners last year.

Along with Fortune, Moore and Rutt, 10 other 2006 Cadet National Greco-Roman champions entered the tournament seeking another national title this weekend.

One of the Cadet Greco-Roman champions, Carson Fields of Georgia, was eliminated from the tournament at 125 pounds when he did not show up for his fourth round match and lost by forfeit.

Among the Cadet National Greco-Roman champions who are unbeaten are Ryan Mango of Missouri at 84 pounds, Max Nowry of Illinois at 91 pounds, Mac Bailey of Missouri at 105 pounds, Grant Gambrall of Iowa at 160 pounds, Romero Cotton of Kansas at 171 pounds, Ryland Geiger of Oregon at 189 pounds and Paul Snyder of Pennsylvania (275).

Cadet National Greco-Roman champions who suffered a loss but are still alive in the tournament includes Dylan Carew of Iowa at 112 pounds and Cole Schmitt of Wisconsin at 140 pounds. 

Carew lost to Zach Neibert of Ohio in the third round. Schmitt, who is up one weight class from where he won the Greco-Roman tournament, lost to Jesse Dong of Ohio in the third round.

Returning runner-up Richy Reinoehl of Pennsylvania remains unbeaten after the first day at 84 pounds.

Two returning Cadet National runners-up, B.J. Futrell of Illinois at 98 pounds and Jason Chamberlain of Utah at 125 pounds, suffered one loss on Wednesday.

Futrell won his first four matches, two by pin and two by technical fall. In the fifth round, he was beaten by Alan Waters of Missouri, 8-4, 2-0, 4-1,

Chamberlain lost to Colin Johnston of Pennsylvania, 2-2, 3-6, 6-1. Chamberlain rebounded and continue to win to remain alive in the pool. 

A number of Cadet freestyle All-Americans from last year were eliminated during the first day. Returning All-Americans knocked out with two losses were Tony Buxton of New Jersey at 98 pounds, Kenny Sanders of Washington at 98 pounds, Tyler Cox of Wyoming (105), Bobby Wunnicke of Wisconsin at 119 pounds, Robert Ward of Pennsylvania (125), Brad Recker of Iowa (130) and Kamron Jackson of Michigan (171).

Returning All-American Kamron Jackson of Michigan lost by pin in the second round to Chris Perry of Oklahoma, a USA Wrestling folkstyle national champion this year. Perry is the younger brother of Mark Perry, an All-American wrestler at the Univ. of Iowa. Jackson was eliminated in the fourth round by Hunter Collins of California.
