Cleveland State Edges West Virginia

WRESTLING EDGED BY CLEVELAND STATE MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (February 18, 2001) - West Virginia University's wrestling team lost to EWL foe Cleveland State 22-19, today, at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers (4-9, 1-6) led 19-8 with three matches remaining, but Cleveland State (4-14, 2-5) won three straight matches from 133-149 to steal the victory. In the contest's final match of the day, Cleveland State's Anthony Coleman major decisioned Mountaineer Anthony Regalbuto, 16-5, to notch the victory for the Vikings. Cleveland State tallied four major decisions on the day. West Virginia did win five matches on the day, highlighted by No. 15 Joe Carr's 22-7 technical fall over Jason Effner at 157 pounds and No. 7 Ryan Kehler's win by forfeit at heavyweight. Carr, now 19-5, finishes the regular season with an undefeated EWL record of 7-0 with 25 EWL dual meet points. He also leads the Mountaineers with a 12-1 dual meet record and 45 overall dual meet points. Kehler is now tied for second WVU's all-time heavyweight seasonal wins list with a 26-5 record. Redshirt freshman Jason Ward jumped from 174 to 197 pounds and defeated Viking Devin Pethtel 7-4. Freshman Greg White notched his fourth victory of the season with a 4-3 decision over Jon Gondol. West Virginia is back in action at the EWL tournament, March 2-4, in Blacksburg, Va.
