FARGO, N.D, - It is the world's biggest wrestling competition.

And definitely an event wrestling fans need to see.

Every year, the nation's best young wrestlers come together for the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet Nationals at the FargoDome in Fargo, N.D.

This competition produces great stories of champions, many who go on to glory in college wrestling, and ultimately at the World and Olympic levels. In 2005, the big story from Fargo was the record-setting performance by Brent Metcalf of Michigan, who tied the national record of six career Junior National titles after winning his third straight double championship on the center mats.

The tournament is scheduled for July 22-29 and is expected to feature outstanding wrestlers in every weight class.

What will be the big news coming out of Fargo this summer? Nothing is ever for certain at this event, where great athletes can get beaten early in the tournament, and fresh new stars burst onto the national scene.

The Junior Nationals features high school wrestlers in grades 9-12. Returning Junior National double champions, winners of both freestyle and Greco-Roman, are Boris Novachkov of California (98) and David Craig of Florida (171).

Junior National freestyle champions who are eligible to return are Mark Kist of Iowa (105) and Mike Grey of New Jersey (125). A returning Junior National Greco-Roman champions is Marty Eng of Oregon (105).

"USA Wrestling is excited about our season finale," said Pete Isais, USA Wrestling's Director of National Events. "Once again there will be a number of fierce battles. The Junior and Cadet Nationals continue to amaze college and USAW National Team Coaches with the level of technique and talent this event showcases. In addition, USAW is excited about providing up-to-date, minute-by-minute results for the largest tournament in the world."

Many of last year's Cadet National champions are expected to move up into the Junior ranks this year and challenge for titles.

The women's division will be held earlier in the week than past years, and will feature numerous athletes who are already respected on the Senior level. Returning champions include Nicole Woody of Maryland (95), Joey Miller of Oklahoma (102), Caitlyn Chase of Illinois (110), Tatiana Padilla of California (119), Desiree Memea of Hawaii (175) and Lakia Henderson of Florida (220).

The Cadet Nationals are for wrestlers who are 15 and 16 years old. One of the exciting young stars expected back this year is 2005 Cadet National double champion Tyrell Fortune of Oregon (215). Cadet National champ David Taylor of Ohio also is expected to make a run at another title in Cadets. Taylor won Cadet Nationals in freestyle at 91 pounds last year and was second in Greco-Roman.

Cadet Greco-Roman champion Tyler Cox of Wyoming also is expected to return to the Cadet class this year. Cox won the title at 91 pounds in 2005.

Ben Provisor of Wisconsin, who recently went 9-0 at the Cadet Dual National Championships in Greco-Roman, is another wrestler to watch at Cadet Nationals. Provisor placed third in Greco-Roman at Cadet Nationals last year. He's expected to compete at 145 pounds this year in Fargo.

The Women's Junior Duals will also be held in Fargo for the second straight year. Texas is the returning team champion, beating California in the championship match last year. Hawaii placed third and Ohio fourth in the last year's team standings. The field is expected to be larger this year, and numerous top talents will be showcased.

The ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet Nationals brings together hundreds of wrestling volunteers, including referees, pairing officials, coaches, state leaders and tournament operation workers, all who provide the opportunity for more than 4,000 athletes to pursue their dreams.
