GREEN BAY, Wis. - A total of 12 young champions won the coveted 2006 Kids Triple Crown awards after capturing freestyle titles at the ASICS Kids National Championships  at Brown County Arena on Saturday.

The Triple Crown is awarded to any wrestler who wins USA Wrestling national titles in all three styles of wrestling in the same season: folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle. 

There were five wrestlers in the Midget division (ages 9-10) to capture the Triple Crown: Cole Verner of Wyoming (50), James Rothwell of Colorado( 65), Bo Nickal of Wyoming (75), Joey Mammolenti of Indiana (87) and Cody Rider of Wisconsin ( 112)

The five Triple Crown winners in the Novice age group (ages 11-12) included Jered Cortez of Colorado at Novice (70), Oliver Pierce of Texas (90), Ryan Cone of Wisconsin (112), Glenn Climmons of Georgia (130) and Joe Scanlan of Iowa (140+).

There were two Schoolboy/girl wrestlers (ages 13-14)  to capture the Triple Crown this year: Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin (85) and Dylan Ness of Minnesota (95).

This ties the record for the most Triple Crown winners in one year with 12, which was originally set in 2004. The program was created in 1997, and the total number of Triple Crown winners has climbed to 90.

Two of the winners have won before, taking their first Triple Crowns in 2004: Climmons and Pierce.

Climmons won a best-of-three series on Friday  to capture the freestyle title over Connor King of Colorado, winning the first match  4-2, 0-6, 7-0, then taking the second match 4-4, 4-4, 8-4.

Pierce won his freestyle title with an impressive technical fall in the gold-medal finals over Nick Wanzek of Minnesota, 6-0, 7-0.

Four wrestlers entered the day with a chance to win the Triple Crown but were defeated during the competition on Sunday and did not win their divisions: Brock Benitz of Wisconsin (Midget 55), Brandon Kingsley of Minnesota (Novice 85), Joe Denova of Georgia (Schoolboy 120) and Morgan McIntosh of California (Schoolboy 145).

There were eight wrestlers who were able to win a Kids National freestyle title for the second straight year. They include Verner, Mammolenti and Thielke, plus Dylan Lucas of Florida (Novice 60), Zac Hall of Michigan  (Novice 75), Mark Grey of New Jersey (Schoolboy 75), Taylor Massa of Michigan (Schoolboy 115) and Nick Moore of Iowa (Schoolboy 125).

There were 30 double champions, winners of both the freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments this weekend in Green Bay. This includes all of the 12 Triple Crown winners, plus 18 others who won both styles.

The other double champions in the Midget division included Dante Rodriguez of Nebraska (60), Logan Massa of Michigan (70), Angus Arthur of Michigan (80), Okalani Langi of California (103) and Tashon Smallweod of California  (120++)

Other double champions in the Novice division were Dylan Lucas of Florida (60), Sam Brancale of Minnesota (65), Zac Hall of Michigan (75), Brandon McBride of Idaho (95), Austin Lobsinger of  California (120) and Justin Kennedy of Idaho (140++)

Also winning double titles in the Schoolboy/girl division were Valyen Rauser of Montana (80), Casey Lanave of New York (105), Taylor Massa of Michigan (112), Nick Moore of Iowa (125), Evan Knutson of Wisconsin (205), Casey Geilenfeldt of Wisconsin (225) and Max Pelfrey of Michigan (250).

Among the double champions were the Massa brothers of Michigan, Logan at Midget 70 and Taylor at Schoolboy/girl 112.
