Herbert, Konrad win bronze medals in freestyle at the World University Championships in Mongolia

Two U.S. wrestlers captured bronze medals in men's freestyle wrestling at the World University Championships in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, June 19.

Capturing bronze medals were Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./Wildcat WC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Cole Konrad (Freedom, Wis./Minnesota Storm) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Herbert opened with a three-period win over K.  Majied of Iran, 0-6, 2-2, 3-2. In the semifinals, he was defeated by the eventual champion A. Isaev of Russia, 0-3, 0-3. In the bronze-medal match, Herbert needed three periods to defeat Ch. Ganzorig of Mongolia, 3-9, 3-0, 6-0

Herbert was a 2006 University Nationals champion, and was an NCAA runner-up competing for Northwestern.

Konrad won his first match by pin over D. Lkhagvordorj of host Mongolia. In the semifinals, Konrad was defeated by pin in the third period by eventual champion P. Allajanihadi of Iran. In the bronze-medal match, Konrad stopped I. Zykov of Russia, 4-0, 3-0.

Konrad was a 2006 University Nationals champion, and was a NCAA champion for Minnesota this year.

Two U.S. wrestlers were defeated and eliminated from medal contention. 

At 55 kg/121 lbs., Luke Smith (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) dropped his opening match to Vladistav Andreev of Belarus by pin in the second period. When Andreev was defeated in the semifinals, Smith was not eligible to advance to the wrestlebacks. He placed eighth in the final standings.

Smith competes for Central Michigan Univ., and was fourth in the recent U.S. World Team Trials on the Senior level.

At 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Andy Simmons (Williamstown, Mich./Michigan WC) dropped two matches. He opened with a loss to M. Hamid of Iran, 4-1, 0-2, 0-1. When Hamid qualified for the gold medal match, Simmons was drawn back into the wrestlebacks. He lost his wrestleback match to U. Polotbai of Uzbekistan, 1-0, 0-7, 0-2. He placed seventh in the final standings.

Simmons was a 2006 University Nationals champion, and was an NCAA All-American for Michigan State.

The final three U.S. competitors in men's freestyle at the have weighed in and received their draws for the first round for Tuesday, June 20.

At 60 kg/132 lbs., Nick Simmons (Williamstown, Mich./Michigan WC) opens against Z. Muhatarbekully of Kazakhstan. If he wins, he will face the winner of the match between T. Tsyrendorjiev of Russia and U. Farkhad of Uzbekistan.

At 74 kg/163 lbs., Trent Paulson (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Cyclone WC) opens against D. Gombodorj of Mongolia. If he wins, Paulson will face the winner of the match between Varga Jazsef of Hungary and Yu Starostin of Russia.

At 96 kg/211.5 lbs., J.D. Bergman (Columbus, Ohio/Ohio International) faces Oyunbileg of China in the first match. If Bergman wins, his opponent is the winner of the bout between T. Mintsalikov of Russia and David Zilberman of Canada.
