The battles were waged in a small, steamy middle school gymnasium.

But the stakes were still plenty high when Oklahoma State's Coleman Scott and Cornell's Troy Nickerson squared off in the finals of the FILA Junior World Team Trials on June 10 at East Middle School in Colorado Springs.

The matchup of NCAA All-Americans did not disappoint at 132 pounds in freestyle. Scott won the first match and Nickerson the second to set up a deciding third match in the best-of-3 series.

Scott took control early in the third match to earn a 1-0, 3-0 win and clinch a spot at the FILA Junior World Championships on Aug. 29-Sept. 3 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Joining Scott on the U.S. freestyle team are Pat McCaffrey (110), Henry Cejudo (121), Brent Metcalf (145.5), Matthew Coughlin (163), Louis Caputo (185), Max Askren (211.5) and Erik Nye (264.5).

Landing spots on the FILA Junior World Team in Greco-Roman were Eric Grajales (110), Spenser Mango (121), Brett Robbins (132), Jason Robbins (145.5), Andrew Bisek (163), Chas Betts (185), Robbie Smith (211.5) and Nye.

Schoolboy Duals: Oklahoma, Pennsylvania claim titles

The freestyle team from Oklahoma and the Greco-Roman team from Pennsylvania were crowned champions at the Schoolboy Dual National Championships on June 8-11 in Indianapolis.

Oklahoma edged Pennsylvania 40-39 in the freestyle finals. Wisconsin downed New Jersey 53-32 in the third-place match. In the finals, Oklahoma wrestlers won 11 of the first 14 matches before Pennsylvania made a valiant comeback by capturing the last five bouts of the dual.

Pennsylvania topped Wisconsin 43-33 in the Greco-Roman finals. New Jersey edged Minnesota Blue 44-40 in the match for third.

Some of the best young American wrestlers in men's and women's freestyle, and Greco-Roman are scheduled to compete at the World University Championships in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, on June 15-20

The U.S. freestyle team includes Luke Smith (121), Nick Simmons (132), Andy Simmons (145.5), Trent Paulson (163), Jake Herbert (185), J.D. Bergman (211.5) and Cole Konrad (264.5).

The freestyle team has plenty of Big Ten flavor with the Simmons brothers from Michigan State, Herbert from Northwestern, Bergman from Ohio State and Konrad from Minnesota. All five are NCAA All-Americans with Konrad winning a national title and Herbert placing second this past season.

The American Greco-Roman squad includes Spenser Mango (121), Jeremiah Davis (132), Jacob Curby (145.5), Jake Fisher (163), Chas Betts (185), Robbie Smith (211.5) and Jake Marquardt (264.5).

The women's freestyle team is comprised of Elizabeth Short (105.5), Sara Fulp-Allen (112), Sharon Jacobson (121), Othella Lucas (130), Alaina Berube (138.5), Randi Miller (147.5) and Tabetha Golt (158.5).

Also coming up: U.S. team headed to Russia; Regional tourneys this weekend

A team of top U.S. freestyle wrestlers will travel to Russia to compete in an international tournament and dual meets in mid-June. The team will compete in dual meets against Russian all-star teams, and will also enter the Shamil Umakhanov International Tournament in Khasavyurt, Russia, on June 17-19.

Three athletes who earned No. 2 rankings on Freestyle Team USA as runner-ups at the U.S. World Team Trials will be on this tour. They include Henry Cejudo (121), Clint Wattenberg (185) and Damion Hahn (211.5).

Brent Metcalf, a six-time Junior National champion who won the FILA Junior World Team Trials last weekend at 145.5, also will be on the trip.

A pair of Kids/Cadet events also will be held this weekend. The Northern Plains Regional Championships are set for June 15-17 in Madison, Wis., while the Southern Plains Regional is set for the same dates in Carlsbad, N.M.
